J. H. MATTHEWS.
DOOR SEGURER.
No. 485,205. Patented Nov. 1, 1892.

5. 11? Mg Max/v UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JEREMIAH H. MATTHEWS, OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA.
DOOR-SECURER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 485,205, dated November 1, 1892.
Application filed April 26, 1892. Serial No. 430,796. (No model.)
T at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JEREMIAH H. MATTHEWS, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Bend, county of St. Joseph, State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Door-Securers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to a door securer which can be carried in the pocket on a key-ring and is always ready and handy to secure a door without the use of a key.
My invention consists of a bolt which has two flat or parallel sides part of its length. On one end there are two spurs at right angles to each other, and at right angles to the bolt proper on the other end is cut a thread, on which is screwed a nut.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view showingboth spurs, thread, and hole in end of bolt for insertion on keyring. Fig. 2 shows a transverse section of a door and frame and how my door-securer is to be inserted between edge of door and jamb. Fig. 3 shows a transverse section of a door and jamb with door closed and my (loor-securer inserted between edge of door and jamb with nut screwed to place. Fig. 4 shows a vertical section of bolt. Fig. 5 is a front end view showing spurs at right angles to each other. Fig. 6 shows a cross and vertical section of nut. I
The same letters refer to the same parts in all the figures.
A in the drawings represents a cross-section of a door hung to door-jamb.
A is a door-jarnb.
B is my door-securer in place.
b represents the thinnest side of the shank of the bolt.
19 represents the thickest side of the shank of the bolt, which is for the purpose of filling different widths of the opening between edge of the door and the jamb.
h represents the thread on end of bolt.
12 represents a hole in end of bolt and is for the purpose of putting same on a key-ring.
6 represents the ends of the parallel sides of the shank, made wedge shape.
b represents the spurs on end of bolt.
(1 represents a transvertical section of nut.
0' represents a cross-section of nut.
The object of my invention is to furnish the traveling public and others with a door-securer which can be carried on an ordinary key-ring and is applicable to any door. By the use of my bolt no one need fear burglars coming through the door unless they break the door in.
To operate or use my door-securer, first examine the space between edge of door and jamb. If it is a wide crevice, insert bolt with long spur and thick shank, and if the crevice is small present the thinner side between the jamb and door. To insert the door-securer, open door ajar, screw nut back to end of thread, insert the bolt so that the thread near the fiat part of the shank is inside of the edge of jamb, insert with the spur toward the jamb, then shut the door and screw the nut up to the edge of the jamb and the door, and the same is locked and cannot be opened from the outside.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent--- A door-securer consisting of the bolt or rod B, having the narrow and the wide parallel sides b and b the thread 17 the hole I), and the beveled ends 12 with the ending spurs b b, in combination with the exterior beveled nut, substantially as shown and described.
JEREMIAH I-I. MATTHEWS.
