DRAFT-EQUALIZER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 485,144, dated October 25, 1892.

Application filed June 20, 1892.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, SAMUEL H. TINSMAN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Morris, in the county of Grundy and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draft-Equalizers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference thereon, forming a part of this specification, in which the figure is a plan view showing the draft-equalizer attached to a plow.

This invention relates to certain improvernents in draft-equalizers, which improvements are fully set forth and explained in the following specification and claims.

Referring to the drawing, E represents the main doubletree of the equalizer, pivotally connected at a point at one side of its center by means of an ordinary clevis with a plow A. The outer end of the longer section of said doubletree has attached to it a doubletree S, provided with a pair of whiflletrees W W, and the outer end of the shorter section of doubletree E is provided with a pulley P, over which passes the cord or chain F, to the outer end of which is attached the doubletree R, having the whiftletrees WV W.

D is a lever pivotally connected at about its center with the upper side of doubletree E in its longer section a short distance from its point of connection with the plow-beam. The forward end of said lever is connected with the inner end of the cord or chain F and its rear or opposite end is connected with the rear part of the plow-beam by means of the cord or chain B. The object of this construction is to permit all the four horses to walk at the side of the plowed ground, the inner horse walking in the furrow and the other three walking on the unplowed ground, and while the plow is attached to the doubletree E at one side from its center, yet the draft of each team is intended to be the same.

This equalizer may be used as well with a reaper or mower, or any other device where it would be useful.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows, to wit:

1. A draft-equalizer comprising the double- Serial No. 437,403- (No model.)

tree E, having its point of attachment to a plow or other object at one side from its center, the lever D, pivotally connected at about its center to the said doubletree in its longer section near its point of attachment to the plow, the cord or chain B for connecting the rear end of said lever with the rear part of a plow or other object attached to said doubletree, the pulley P, attached to the outer end of the short section of doubletree E, the doubletree R and its whiflletrees \V W, the cord or chain F, passing over pulley P and connecting the forward end of lever D with doubletree R, and the doubletree S and its whifiletrees W VV', connected to the outer end of the longer section E, all combined and adapted to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. In a draft-equalizer, the combination of the doubletree E, having the pulley P, lever D, cords or chains B F, doubletrees R S, and whiffletrees W W W W, all arranged to 0p crate substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

3. In a draft-equalizer, the combination of a doubletree having its point of attachment to a plow or other objectlocated at one side from its center, a lever pivoted at about its center to and across said doubletree in its longer section, a cord or chain for connecting the rear end of said lever with a plow or other object connected with said doubletree, a pulley connected to said doubletree at the end of its shorter section, and a cord or chain for passing over said pulley and connecting the inner end of said lever with a doubletree or other object, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

4. In a draft-equalizer, the combination, with the doubletree, of a lever pivotally connected to and across said doubletree at one side from its point of attachment to a plow or other object and having its rear end connected with the plow or other object and its forward end connected with an auxiliary doubletree, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
