Description

UNITED STATES JULIUS NIESE, OF ST. LOUIS,
PATENT OFFICE.
MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO ELISE NIESE, OF SAME PLACE.
SOAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 485,113, dated October 25, 1892.
Application filed April 27, 1892. Serial No. 430,885. (No specimens.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIUS NIESE, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Soap, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention consists in combining with any good soap about an equal quantity of finely-powdered calcined bone-dust. To this may be added about five per cent. of powdered sulphur.
In preparing the bone-dust I take hard bones-such as shin-bones-and calcine them thoroughly, so as to rid them of all combustible material. The calcined bone is then reduced to a fine powder and added to about an equal quantity of pure soap while in the boiling process and the compound thoroughly mixed. The ordinaryprocess of soap-making is followed from this point. In some cases I add to the above composition while in the process of manufacture about five per cent. of finely-powdered sulphur. I prefer new hard bones on account of their whiteness and the superior quality of calcium phosphate which they contain. It is quite evident that bones which become bleached and porous by age will produce bone-ash of a dark-gray color, as well as calcium phosphate of an inferior quality.
My medicated soap is made half and half of the finest powdered bone-ash or phosphate of lime and the base of the finest white soap made from fresh tallow, cocoanut-oil, and alkalies. To produce the desired results, I do not mechanically mix these ingredients, but I thoroughly assimilate them by boiling all together.
I make a sulphur soap the same as the medicated soap, only five per cent. of lac sulphur is added, and the result is that the sulphur is chemically changed or converted by boiling into sulphate of potash or liver sulphur.
The effects of the ingredients used in the preparation of my soap on the skin is that the small particles of bone-ash enter into the pores of the skin and, in combination with the liver of sulphur, produces very beneficial effects to cure scrofulous sores and ulcers, eczema, and dandruff. It will also remove pimples, blackheads, and such, and prevent chafing and chapping of the skin, rendering the skin soft and strong.
I claim as new and of my invention- 1. The above-described soap, composed of about equal proportions of common soap and powdered calcined bone-dust.
2. The above-described soap, composed of about equal proportions of ordinarysoap and powdered calcined bone-dust and about onetwentieth part of powdered sulphur.
JULIUS NIESE.
