S. B. BARTLETT.
ROLLER BEARING.
No. 485,083. Patented Oct. 25, 1892.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL B. BARTLETT, OF CAMDEN, NORTH CAROLINA.
ROLLER-BEARING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 485,083, dated October 25, 1892.
Application filed April 6, 1892. Serial No. 427,991. (No model.)
To whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL B. BARTLETT, a
. citizen of the United States, and a resident of Camden, in the county of Camden and State of North Carolina, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Roller-Bearings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which is a central sectional elevation of my device.
In the drawing, A indicates the hub of a wheel, and 1 indicates an axle box or casing. Within said axle box or casing is centrally placed a collar 6, having at each end thereof a beveled ring 8 8, contacting loosely therewith. A short distance from the rings 8 8, before alluded to, and at each end of the box 1 are other rings 9 9,with theirbeveled portions facing the bevels of the rings 8 8. Upon the shaft or axle is mounted acollar2 in a position corresponding with the collar Qfibove referred to; and at eacliend thereof is a ring 3 3, whose outer faces are beveled. Near the last n amed rings are also placed upon the shaft or axle other rings 4: 4:, whose inner faces are beveled to correspond with the bevel in rings 3 3. By locatingthe beveled rings as already mentioned a space 9 ,9. is left at each end of the box between the beveled faces of the rings before referred to. In said spaces are placed a series of balls of friction-rollers 10 10, corresponding in shape to the configuration of the spaces 9 9'.
In order to secure the parts hereinbefore mentioned in position, an enlargement or collar 11 is secured on the axle or shaft 5, and
. the outer end of said shaft or axle has re- Attention is directed to the fact that all of the collars and ssja m'ing'and on tli eaxle o 1: shaft, except the toners 11, 12, and 14, ar ,.la9.sa.t.tem thus a new one may readily be inserted by an unskilled person.
While I have shown my device applied to a vehicle-hub, it is obvious that it may be used on shaf ting or in other suitable places.
What I claim is- 1. In a roller-bearing, a box provided with a central collar, an axle wit-h a corresponding collar, and two s'e gs provided with spa H s and a senes'ofioose rollers 1 spaces.
2. Ina roller beariiig, a box provided with a central collar, an axle with a corresponding collar, and two series of beveled rings provided with oblong spaces between them, and a series of oblong rollers, and means at the end of the box for holding the parts in position.
3. In a roller-bearing, a box provided with a central collar, an axle with a corresponding collar, and two series of beveled rings provided with spaces between each series, and a series of loose rollers in each of said spaces, all of said collars and rollers being loosely mounted in the box or casing, and means secured to the ends of the casing and to the axle or shaft for holding said parts in position. In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL B. BARTLETT.
