MACHINE FOR GINNING COTTON.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 485, dated November 25, 1837.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN STnvnNs, of Poughkeepsie, in the county of Dutchess and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement on Machines for Grinning Cotton; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description:
Figure 1, in the accompanying drawing is a section of the principal working parts of the improvement. A A, Fig. 1, are two horizontal rollers, the top roller is made of iron or other like metal, and the under roller is made of cork-they may be made to revolve by means of pulleys B B, or any other convenient way and are supported in their position by stands 0 C, having boxes D, D, D, D, fitted thereinthe upper box is at liberty to rise and fall in the grooves in stands O C, there being spiral springs within the stands resting on the upper box, which are compressed more or less by means of screws E E which produce any degree of pressure desired upon the rollers when the cotton is passing throughother kinds of springs or weights may be used to bear upon the said upper box.

Operation: The cotton is fed in between the rollers and is drawn through without 40 the least injury to the staple leaving the seeds to drop from the rollers, being prevented from passing through by the rollers being pressed closely together.
