PATENT OF ICE.
JOHN WVILSON FLEMING, OF BROOKLYN, NEXV YORK.
BOILER-TUBE CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 484,852, dated October 25, 1892.
Application filed June 10, 1892.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN WILSON FLEMING, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boiler-Tube Gutters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tools for cutting tubes of steam-boilers when it is desired to remove them from the boiler-heads.
Boiler tubes or fines are generally secured to the heads by expanding them in the holes in the heads. This renders it very difficult to remove a tube. The tool devised by me is so constructed that it may be inserted in the end of a tube and the cutters expanded to cut through the tube close to the inner side of the boiler-head.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a tube-cutter embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a front view.
In all the figures the cutters are shown as expanded.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A design-ates cutter-blocks. These blocks are of segmental form, and as here shown are four in number; but it is to be understood that the number may be varied without departing from the spirit of my invention. The blocks when placed together form a cylinder with a longitudinal hole a,which has a taperfrom end to end, the smaller opening being at the front end of the cutter-blocks. The blocks are held in cylindrical position, but allowed to expand radially, when required, by means of collar A, of spring metal, such as steel, having its ends loosely lapped, as shown. The collar is seated in the annular recesses a in the blocks, so that it.will not slip longitudinally of the Serial No. 436,196. (No model.)
blocks. The front portion of each cutterblock is provided with aradially-extending integral cutter A and in the rear of the cutters each block A is provided with an integral shoulder A designed to bear against the outer side of the boiler-head and prevent the cutters from slipping too far into a tube.
A designates an expander consisting of a metal bar having a taper corresponding to the taper of the hole a, so that when the expander is driven through the hole the blocks and cutters Will be expanded laterally.
In operation the cutter is placed in a tube and the expander A is inserted. Then by driving the expander inward by striking on its outer end witha hammerthe cutter-blocks will be forced laterally outward and force the cutters through the wall of the pipe. Of course in the first cutting there will be uncut portions of pipe between adjacent ends of the cutters A but these portions are afterward cut by Withdrawing the expander A and turning the blocks to bring the cutters against these uncut portions and again driving in the expander.
I-laving described my invention, what I claim is- The combination of the segmental blocks having the longitudinal taper-hole, the cutters integral with said blocks, the shoulders in the rear ofthe cutters and integral with the blocks, the spring-collar seated in the annular recesses in the rear of the shoulders, and the tapered expander, substantially as specified.
JOHN WILSON FLEMING.
