Description

(No Model.)
J. F. STRANGE. TOP ROLL FOR SPINNING MACHINES.
No. 484,760 Patented Oct. 18, 1892.
UNiTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN F. STRANGE, OF NEW BEDFORD, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO HIM- SELF AND JOSHUA B. WINSLOW, OF SAME PLACE.
TOP ROLL FOR SPINNING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 484,760, dated October 18, 1892.
Applic i n filed y 1 1892- Serial No. 433,596. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN F. STRANGE, a cit izen of the United States, residing at New Bedford,in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Top Rolls for Spinning-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The nature of my invention consists in a roll-shaft formed of hard vulcanized fiber provided with a covering of the same material in a softer condition, whereby a lighter consumption of lubricating-oil will be required and the injurious accumulation of lint and fibers upon the roll will be prevented by the electrical condition of the roll.
The figure represents the side View of the top roll, the comparatively-soft covering of vulcanized fiber being shownin section.
In the accompanying drawing, A represents the shaft of the roll, the said shaft being preferably made of what is known as hard vulcanized fiber, the said material being easily wrought and well adapted for the purpose, and upon the shaft A are placed the tubes B B, made of vulcanized fiber in its softer condition, which adapts it to take the place of the leather heretofore employed for this purpose.
In making my improved top roll the shaft A is first turned to the proper size, and the tubes B B, which are bored out to fit the said shaft, forced thereon and then turned to a true exterior surface, and as the material of which the roll is formed is not affected by oil the roll will continue to produce uniform results upon the thread, and when the covering has by wear become defective the surface of the roll can be trued up by turning a slight chip OK the same, thus avoiding the expense of re-covering with leather, as heretofore.
-Heretofore the shaft of the top roll has been made of metal, which, owing to the narrow bearings for the saddles and the considerable weight to be supported by the bearings, has been required to be often lubricated to prevent the bearings from cutting and thus becoming worn and rough; but by the employment of a roll-shaft made of vulcanized fiber a single oiling is sufficient to last for an indefinite length of time and there is no danger of cutting the bearing. The roll-shaft and its covering being also a non-conductor of electricity will serve to prevent the electrical attraction of the cotton lint and fiber, thus preventing the accumulation of the same upon the roll to an injurious extent, as heretofore.
I claim as my invention- A top roll composed of a shaft made of hard vulcanized fiber and a covering formed by a tube of soft vulcanized fiber, substantially as described.
JOHN F. STRANGE.
