UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHRISTIAN HARTMANN, OF HANOVER, GERMANY.
HORSESHOE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 484,713, dated October 18, 1892.
Application filed April 19, 1892- Serial No. 429,780- (No model.) 7
.To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN HARTMANN, a subject of the King of Prussia, residing at Hanover, Prussia, Empire of Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horseshoes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improvenents in horseshoe-calks and the shoes there- Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a sectional plan of a shoe provided with my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional View on line 0: 0c of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on line y y of Fig. 1. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are detail views of the calk. Figs. 7 and 8 are de tails of an implement for removing the calks.
The invention consists of spring metal plates h, slightly curved and provided with ribs 'i and t" on the concave side thereof. These spring-pieces are let into perpendicular slots is, formed in the treading-surface of the horseshoe to which my invention is to be applied, and the calks extend outwardly a proper distance from the said slots. The fixing of the calks in the slots, which do not go quite through the shoe, is entirely eifected by friction by the spring power of the calk, inasmuch as the spring-pieces forming the same are laid fiat in the slots of the horseshoe, and thereby are in tension, in consequence of which the ribs '5 'i at the end of the spring are firmly pressed against the side walls of the slot, and the middle part of thespring or the crown is firmly pressed against the other side wall of the slot.
In order to expand or straighten the springpiece, to allow of its insertion in the slot, I cut the two end ribs 1' t' on the spring-piece beveled at the base, while the middle rib or ribs t" are only so far beveled as to insure a firm and easy insertion into the slot, and upon the forcing of the spring-piece into the slot the side ribs then act as wedges upon the flat spring and expand it gradually as it enters the slot. By preference the ribs extend to the treading edges of the spring-pieces and are somewhat beveled or sloped, so that the upper edges of the spring-pieces entirely form the tread, ledge, 01' surface.
The form or description of horseshoe which is to be provided with the calks according to my invention may be varied at pleasure. I
may form the shoe with the bearing parts at I the back of the shoe, connected by a T- formed rib b, and the surface upon which the hoof rests enlarged by checks 0, which extend in between the angles of the iron. In the space underneath these checks a padding of indiarubber, felt, or other similar material may be placed in the horseshoe, for which purpose the inner sides inclosing the padding are partially divided by a groove d, and the vertical 1. The herein -described horseshoe-calk,
consisting of a bent or curved spring-metal plate having the vertical ribs at the ends of one side face, as and for the purpose substantially such as set forth.
2. The calk composed of a curved springmetal plate having the beveled ribs thereon, substantially as set forth.
3. The horseshoe having an elongated socket, in combination with the calk composed of the curved spring-metal plate havin g the vertical ribs on one side thereof sprung into said socket and held therein by friction, substantially as described.
4. The horseshoe having an elongated socket, in combination with the calk formed of a curved spring-metal plate having ribs 7; t" and apertures m m, substantially as described.
5. The horseshoe provided and integral with the inwardly-projecting horizontal checks 0, and the vertical rib e, divided into separate lugs, for the purpose stated, by vertical transverse slots or openings f, as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHRISTIAN H ARTMANN.
