SHIELD FOR BAKING-OVENS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters latent No. 484,539, dated October 18, 1892.

Be it known that I, KATHARINE O. MUNsoN, of WVinthrop, in the county of Suifolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shields for Baking-Ovens, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.

The object of this invention is to furnish for baking-ovens a removable and reversible shield adapted to extend over or under articles being baked, so as to protect their surfaces from excessive heat and consequent scorching and also to retard the crusting of the articles, thus permitting the gases to escape before the surface becomes too hard. By the use of my device the burning of bread, cake, and pastry is prevented and a delicate amber surface is secured, while the taste of the articles is greatly improved by the absence of the dryness ordinarily experienced.

My improved shield in its best form consists of a piece of sheet metal, the central portion of which extends horizontallyorin a slight curve along the central or upper part of the oven above the articles being baked, then obliquely downward at each side thereof to a suitable support, and preferably bent upwardly and then outwardly, as shown, so that the extremities of the sheet metal rest for support on the ledges projecting from the side walls of the oven to support the ordinary rack or grating. The device is adjustable to fit ovens of varying widths by expanding or contracting the sides or wings.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of one of my improved shields complete, and Fig. 2 represents the same in position for use in a stove-oven.

D D the terminal flanges or extremities of the shield, (shown as resting upon the pins or ledges E,) which project inwardly from the side Walls of the oven.

The device is formed complete from a single sheet of tin or equivalent material bent at its sides, about as shown, across the entire width of the sheet without any marginal flange at the front or rear edges. The sides or wings can therefore be sprung out or in and made more or less oblique, so as to readily adjust the device to the width of the oven. In some casesl omit the upturned wings O and flanges D or form the flanges at the foot of the sides B, as will be readily understood. The shields rest compactly for shipment and are light, convenient, and cheap.

I claim as my invention 1. The described removable shield, formed from a single piece of sheet metal and having the central portion extending across the oven above the articles being baked, and the downwardly-extending sides adjustable in position to different widths and adapted to rest upon lateral supports in the oven, substantially as set forth.

2. As an improved article of manufacture, the oven-shield described, having the flat central body and depending sides terminating in the upwardly-extending wings having outward terminal flanges or rests, substantially as set forth.
