SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 483,922, dated October 4, 1892. Application filed March 31, 1892. Serial No. 427,273. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SCHOOLER G. HORN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bladensburg, in the county of Knox and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Ironing-Board, of which 'the following is a specification.

This invention relates to ironing-boards adapted for ironing shirts, and also skirts and analogous articles; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of theparts thereof, as will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.

' The object of this invention is to provide convenient appliances in connection with an ironing-board whereby the neckband may be properly distended and the lower portion of the bosom fastened to produce the requisite tension and place a shirt in such position as to remove wrinkles and make the process of ironing more readily accomplished.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of an ironing-board in position to receive a shirt and to expand or distend the neckband and stretch the bosom thereof. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3

Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the board proper, having reversible legs 2, pivotally connected to one end thereof and held in either of their adjusted positions by stops 3. The board is reversible, one side thereof being adapted for employment as an ordinary ironing-board and may be suitably padded, as is ordinarily done. The opposite side of the board at one end thereof is provided with a bosom-board 4, which is secured in position permanently and is shaped to conform to the bosom of a shirt. Across the lower end of said board 4 is a cleat or strip 5, of less thickness than the said board, and acts as a stop for mechanism, which will be hereinafter set forth. Adjacent to this lower end of the bosom-board 4 is mounted a stretcher, which consists of a fixed section 6, to which is connected a movable section 7. The said movable section 7 has pins 8 secured thereto and surrounded by coiled springs 9, said pins and coiled springs being movably seated in openings in the ends of the fixed section 6.

The outward movement of the movable section 7 is limited by the cleat or strip 5,'against which it normally bears, and I the said movable section is also formed with a groove 11 extending entirely across the same.

To the fixed section 6 is pivotally connected a bail 12, having eyes 13,'and in said eyes are secured the ends of a clamping-bail 14, which is adapted to take over the movable section-7 and engage the groove 11 thereof. The bail 12 forms an operating-bail for the clamping bail 14, and when arranged in the position shown in Fig. 3 it is thrown back of the fixed section 6.

On the head end of the-board4 is mounted a neckband-expanding device, which consists of two semicircular blocks15 and 16, theblock 15 being fixed and the block 16 movable. The block 16 has a guide bar 17, secured thereto, said guide-bar having a dovetailed portion 18, moving through a dovetailed slot 19 in the fixed section 15. I The said portion 18 of the bar 17 is provided with a series of teeth or pins 20, projecting from the upper face thereof and above the surface of the fixed section 15. A lever 21 is pivoted to the section 15, as at 22, on opposite sides of the inner termination'of the dovetailed slot 19. A

loop 23 is secured to the lever and extends beyond the same a suitable distance, in orderto engage the teeth or pins 20, projecting upward from the bar 17, as set forth, to thereby draw the section 16' toward the section 15 or force the same outward therefrom in order to release the same from contact with the neckband or to retain the neckband in position therearound. The upper surface of the bar 17 in section 16 is provided with notches 24 to operate the section before pressure of the lever 21 is required. At the head of both boards a screw-rod 25 is inserted and passes through aslot 26 in the upper edge of a clamp ing-block 27, the said clamping-block havin a wire loop spanning'the said slot 26 to hold the block rotatably on the said screw-rod. A

clamping-arm 28 is fitted to the screw-rod 25 and is adapted to force the block 27 close against the head end of the board. The said block 27 is formed with a shoulder 29, upon which the board 1 rests when the bosom-board is in position for use, the said shoulder being wide enough to permit the block 27 to be moved away from the board a suitable dis tance to insert a portion of the shirt being clamped thereby without withdrawing the shoulder entirely from beneath the board. This shoulder 29 forms a wall 30, which is curved to conform to the curve of the adjacent ends of the boards, and therein are held the shoulder portions of the shirt when the latter is clamped in position on .the bosomboard.

When the device is used for ordinaryironing, the clamping-arm 28 isloosened on the screw-rod 25, and the clamping-block maybe reversed, so that th e shoulder 29 will take against the bosom-board at, and the legs 2 are reversed when the board proper (designated by the numeral 1) will be in position for use.

In applying a shirt to the bosomboard it is properly fitted thereover and the shoulder portions held by the clamping-block 27. The neckband is placed around the neckband-expanding device, consisting of the

15 and 16, and the said section 16 is operated to expand the same. The lower portionof the shirt is drawn down over the stretcher, the

12 and 14 having been first thrown backward. The bails are then moved forward until the clamping-bail 14 takes over the movable section 7 into the groove thereof, which draws the lower portion of the shirt there with, and the bail 12 is then thrown back of the fixed section 6, thereby firmly holding and stretching the shirt-bosom in position.

The convenience and advantages of the construction hereinbefore set forth are readily apparent to those skilled in the art, and need not be further enlarged upon herein.

It will be apparent that the section 15 of the neck-block could be made movable in a manner similar to the section 16 and the lever and its parts be arranged to reversely operate to what is shown in the drawings. This change in the parts would involve no departure from the invention, and, in fact, could be obtained by a mere reversal or turning around of the parts as now positioned.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. In an ironing-board, the combination of a board proper and a bosom-board fixed to one side thereof and having a screw-rod projecting from the end of the same, areversible clamp at the end of said boards having a recess in the upper side thereof and awire loop for the passage therethrough of the said screw-rod, and also provided with a shoulder on which the board rests, a collar-expander on the bosom-board, and a stretching device at the foot of the bosom-board, substantially as described.

2. In an ironing-board, the combination of the board proper and a bosom-board fixed to one side thereof,a stretcher consisting of a fixed section, amovable section, an operatingbail pivotally connected to said fixed section, and a clamping-bail movably attached to said operating-bail and adapted to engage the said movable section, substantially as described.

3. In an ironing-board, the combination of a board proper and a bosom-board thereon, a neckband-expanding device consisting of a fixed section and a movable section, a guiderod having projections thereon and secured to said movable section, and alever attached to the fixed section and havinga loop adapted to engage said projections of the guide-rod, substantially as described.

4. In an ironing-board, the combination of a board proper and a bosom-board fixed thereon, a stretcher consisting of a fixed and a movable section arranged at the foot of said bosom-board, an operating-bail pivotally connected to said fixed section, a clamping-bail movably attached to said operating-bail, a neckband-expandingdevice at the head of said bosom-board,consisting of a movable and afixed section, and a reversible clamp at the head of said boards having a shoulder, substantially as described.
