UNTTED STATES PATENT Gerlos.
CHRISTIAN VASHBURN, OF` BRIDGEVATER, MASSACHUSETTS.
HAMMOCK-SWINGING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 483,753, dated October 4, 1892.
Application tiled October 9, 1891. Serial No. 408,213. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom. t may concern:
Beit known that I, CHRISTIAN WASHBURN, a cltizen of the United States, residing at Brldgewater, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hammock- Swinging Apparatus, of which the following, taken 1n connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
The object of my invention is to produce a haminock-swin ging apparatus whereby a person 1n the hammock can cause it to swing by a slight motion of the hand.
'The invention consists of a bell-crank lever pivoted to an arm that is secured to one of the posts or supports carrying the hammock, and a cord connecting the short arm of the lever and the rope of the hammock, and another cord attached to the long arm of the lever, which cord is operated by the person occupying the hammock.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Flgure l represents a hammock supported from two posts, to one of which is attached a swlnglng apparatus embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan or top view of one end of the same, drawn to a larger scale. Fig. Sis an lsometrical perspective View of the swinging apparatus.
A A represent posts provided with hooks B B, to which the hammock C is hung.
D 1s an arm secured to one ot' the posts A a short distance below the hook B. To the outer end of the arm D is pivoted a bellcrank lever E, to the short arm e of which is secured one end of a rope F, the other end of which is looped and passed over the hammock-rope C before it is placed upon the hook B. To the long arm e of the bellcrank leverE is secured a long rope G, the free end of which extends toward and rests in the hammock, so as to be operated by the occupant.
In the drawings I have shown rings secured to the end of each arm ofthe bell-crank lever for attaching the ropes; but of course they could be formed with holes and the rings be dispensed with.
As the hammock is suspended longitudinally between the supports, one at each end, its movement is in the nature of a partial rotation with the points of suspension, as an axis, and as the main portion of it when at rest is suspended from the supports the bellcrank lever must be pivoted so that its arms will move in a horizontal plane, so that when the draw upon the `longer cord is exerted the motion will be transmitted to the hammock to move it in a lateral direction, and as the movement or swinging of the hammock is increased the suspended portion will move in the arc of a circle. The construction of applicants device also admits of the hammock being operated in narrow halls or on verandas, where it is necessary to have the operating mechanism as compact as possible to avoid being in the way, and also to avoid all undue friction as where the cord would be passed over a pulley and also to permit of this force being exerted by the short movement of the arm that can be had when a person is lying in a hammock.
The operation is as follows: The person oc cupying the hammock takes hold of the rope G and draws upon the same, which communicates motion to the bell-crank lever E, and by the rope F to the hammock-rope C,Vand causes it to vibrate and thus impart aswinging motion to the hammock. It will be seen that a very slight movement imparted to the cord C' will cause the hammock to swing a considerable distance, thus the operator has to move his hand but slightly and that in a` line longitudinally of his body if he is lying down.
What I claim as my invention ism- The combination, with two supports, of a hammock horizontally suspended therefrom, the connection between the hammock and the supports being such that the hammock can have a lateral and vertical movement relatively to the supports, a bracket secured to one of the supports and projecting laterally therefrom relatively to the hammock, a bellcrank lever pivotally secured at its angle to the outer end of the bracket, with its arms movable in a horizontal plane, one arm of the lever projecting toward the center of the hammock and the other arm projecting substantially toward the support, a cord secured to the outer end of the first-mentioned arm and connecting with the hammock near the support, and another cord secured to the outer end IOO of the other a-rrn and extending to the central two subscribing witnesses, ron this 7 th day of portion of the hammock and adapted.- to be August, A. D. 1891. drawn longitudinally by the occupant, said cords crossing each other near the support, 5 substantially as set forth. Witnesses:
In testimony whereof I have signed my JOSEPH TOOKER, name to this specification, in the presence of LORIN HEITH.
CHRISTIAN VVASI-IBURN.
