PIANO-ACTION.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 483,561, dated October 4, 1892.

Application filed June 27, 1892.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, STANLEY A. JEWETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and Improved Piano-Action, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to an improved pianoaction in which an adj ustable hammer is used; and the object of my invention or improvement is to produce the best tone from the strings of a piano. Iattain this object by the means illustrated in the annexed drawings, and set forth in the following specification.

Figure 1 is a side view of my improved action; Fig. 2, a rear view of the hammer with the lower portion of the stem broken 0% and showing the relative position of the hammer to the strings and upper bridge. Fig. 3 is a front View of the hammer, stem, and heel; Fig. 4, a sectional view of the heel, and Fig. 5 a sectional view of the hammer.

Similar letters designate similar parts in the drawings and specification.

There is one proper place for the hammer to strike the string of a piano, between the bearings or bridges for said string, whereby the best tone is produced, and there is but one such place. The present form of the various scales and the position of the hammer being arbitrary, it is difficult to produce the best tone from each string therewith. To overcome this difficulty and also to correct what are termed false tones, an adjustable hammer is substituted for the hammer now in use, which is rigidly attached to the stem and the stem rigidly attached to the heel. With this adjustable hammer the imperfection in the various scales is in a large degree corrected by setting said hammer nearer to or farther from the upper bridge. It is not necessary that both the hammer and stem be adjustable, as shown and described hereinafter, since the hammer may be rigidly attached to the stem or the stem to the heel, leaving but one member detachable.

are drawn together by the set-screw l), Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 5, thereby securely holding the hammer A upon the stem 0 and permitting of the adjustment of the same.

The hammer-heeLE, Figs. 1, 3, and 4, 1s provided with the vertical cleft E, Figs. and fl, and the opening F, Fig. 4. The opening F 1s of the same diameter as that of the stem 0 and may extend the entire length of the heel E. It is shown in Figs. 1 and 4 as extending into but not through said heel. The stem 0 is held in the opening F by drawing together the sides of the cleft E with the set-screw G, Figs. 1, 3, and 4, and is capable of adjustment thereby.

It will readily be seen that the distance on the strings H, Fig. 2, between the bridge I and the place where the hammer A strikes may be easily and quickly varied to obtain the best results, and herein lies the great advantage of my improvement over all other piano-actions.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In an improved piano-action, a vertically-cleft hammer provided with the opening A in combination with the stem and a setscrew in the manner substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. In an improved piano-action, a vertically-cleft heel provided with the opening E, n combination with the stem and aset-screw 1n the manner substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

3. In an improved piano-action, a stem, 1n combination with a vertically-clef t and pierced hammer and heel, each provided with a suitable set-screw in the manner substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

4. In an improved piano-action, a vertlcally-cleft and pierced hammer and heel connected by a stem and suitable set-screws, 1n combination with the strings and bridge of a p1- ano in the manner substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
