ELBERT D. MILKSLOF MAOIAIIAS, NEWT YORK. p
DEVICE FOR SUPPORTING WALL-PAPER.
SPCIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 482,645, dated September 13, 1892.
' Application tiled April 29, 1892.f Serial No. 43I|190| (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELBERT D. MILKs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Machias, in the county of Cattaraugus and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Supporting Wall-Paper; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has relation to improvements in devices for supporting wall-paper While the same is being hung; and it has for its general object to provide such a device adapted to be readily connected to a ceiling or wall without injury thereto.
A further object of the invention is to yieldingly connect the paper to the supporting device, so as to render the hanging of the same more easy.
To the attainment of the foregoing and other objects the invention consists in the peculiar construction, certain novel combina' tions, and the adaptation of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim appended.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a front elevation of my improved device in an operative position, and Fig. 2 is a vertical diametrical section taken through the body of the same.
Referring by letter to the said drawings, A indicates the body of my improved device, which is preferably of a cylindrical form, as illustrated. This body A is provided with an air-chamber B, which preferably extends the full length of the same and communicates at one endJWith the suckencup O, which may be formed from'leather or othersuitable material and may be connected to the body A in any approved manner.
Placed within the chamber B, which is preferably of a circular form in cross-section, is a piston D, which is designed and adapted to be reciprocated by the piston-rod E to create a vacuum in the cup C and cause the same to adhere to the ceiling of a room. Thus it will be perceived that my improved device may be Quickly and eonvenientl y connected at any suitable point to the ceiling of a room wlthout damaging or marring the same.
Suitably connected to or formed integral with the piston-rod E is a cross-head F, to which are connected the upwardly-extending parallel guide-bars G, which are provided at their upper ends with cap disks or blocks H, against which bear the coil-springs I. These coil-springs I, which are placed in chambers or frames at the side of the air-chamber B, serve in practice to normally hold the piston D at the lower end of the said air-chamber, whereby it Will be perceived that when the device is held against the ceiling and the piston D is reciprocated in the air-chamber Bto create a vacuum in the cup O the said springs will serve to return the said piston to its normal position at the lower end of the chamber B, so that the hand-knob J may be readily grasped when desired.
Fulcrumed at an intermediate point in its length upon the body A, and preferably adjacent to the upper end thereof, is a lever K, the weight portion a of which is of a circu lar form in cross-section, so that a roll of paper mounted thereon is freeto turn, while the power portion b is preferably of a rectangular form in cross-section and is designed to receive the counterbalance-weight c, which is movable thereon and is provided with a setscrew d, whereby it may be fixed at any point desired.
The operation of my device is`as follows: VV'hen paper is to be applied to the ceiling of a room, with the roll mounted on the long end a of the lever the device is applied by pressing upon the knob J and forcing the rods E and G and the piston D inwardly, then applying the mouth of the sucker-cup O to the surface of the ceiling at any desired point, then releasing the pressure at the knob J, permitting the springs to act and force the rods E and G to a normal position, exhausting the air from the chamber B, and permitting the pressure of the atmosphere to hold the device in place. The adjustable weight c permits rolls of various sizes of paper to be held in a horizontal position while the paper is being applied, said weight serving to counteract the weight of the roll of paper on said lever, thereby serving to prevent undue movement or displacement of the air-chamber and consequent tearing away the sucker-cup from the ceiling.
IOC
Instead of mounting a, rol] of paper upon' the Weight end of the lever K a strip of paper of the length desired may be cut from the roll and one end of the same may be connected in any approved manner to the end et of the "lever, after which the paper may be pasted. upon the wail.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a device for supporting wall-paper, the combination of the body havingr an air-chamber formed therein, a sucker-cup at one end, a piston 'engaging the air-chamber, a piston- ELBERT D. MILKS.
