To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK HANISH, of Terre Haute, in the county of Vigo and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Seines or Nets; and 1 do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specifioation.

The invention relates to certain improvements in fishing appliances, and more particularly to improvements in seines.

The object of the invention is to provide an improved construction of seine, cheap, simple, and durable, and very effective in operation, and which can be folded to retain the minnows or other fish within the same after they have been entrapped.

The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinationsof parts more fully described hereinafter, and partied larly pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation, as in use. Fig. 2 is a top plan thereof. Fig. 3 shows the same folded. Fig. 4c is a detail view illustrating a modification.

In the drawings referenceletter a indicates the seine. This seine is provided with a supporting-frame working on the principle of an umbrella-frame, and in this particular construction the seine a is suspended from the lower ends of the ribs b, which at their upper ends are attached to the upper portion of the stick 0.

01 indicates a runner on the stick provided with the stretohers for operating the ribs. It is evident that when the runner is forced up the same will be stretched into operative position, as shown in Fig. 1, and when the runner is forced down toward the lower end of the short stick a, the ribs are brought together below the stick and the seine is closed by bringing its edges together and is suspended from the lower ends of the ribs, as shown in Fig. 3. The upper end of the stick is provided with an aperture or eye 6 to receive rod f, so that the seine can be held in the water a distance from the person manipulating the same. A bait-bag g is removably suspended from the lower end of the stick 0, so

as to hang centrally within the seine, and this bag is provided, preferably, with a weight h, sulticient to sink the entire apparatus. The bait-bag is preferably removably suspended by means g, preferably consisting of a hook at its upper end entering an eye in the lower end of the stick. By this means the bait-bag can be removed when the seine is to be folded. If desired, a rigid ring 1' can be secured in the seine, so that the seine will be held expanded, as shown in Fig. 4, when folded, whereby capacity will be increased, the upper edges of the seine in this case being preferably tied or secured to the lower ends of the ribs when the apparatus is folded.

It should be observed that the bait-bag, having the weight, rests in the center of the seine and holds it in proper position when in use, and that in operation the seine rests fiat in the water, and when it is drawn up the bottom or central portion hangs down in the shape of a pocket, which catches and holds the minnows.

Having thus fully described my invention,

what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is

1. A minnow-seine consisting of the seine proper, the umbrella-frame supporting the same and having a short stick, and the baitbag suspended from the end of the stick so the seine attached to the lower ends of the ribs, the runner having the stretcher-s to close and open the ribs, and a bait-bag suspended from the stick within the seine, and a weight or sinker, substantially as described.
