IM PROV'EM ENVTv I N WH ET-D R iLLS.
Specification forming part `o l" Letters Patent-'No.llS-,Q dated Jnne 20, 1865.
To all whom tina/y concern-: l, Y
Beit knowirt-hat I, JACOB B.' CROWELL, of
V'(Jrreenc-astle, in the countyof Franklin and State of Pennsylvania, have linvented anew and useful Improvement in Wheat-Drills g and I do hereby deciarethat thefollow'ing is a; full and exact description thereof,- reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
. My improvement consists, rst, in the mode of, gearing andthe use ot'. an eecentriepin in connection with three gear-wheels foroperating the feed-shatter stirrers 4for wh'eat-drills,1 the wheels being thrown out of gear by the barlusually employed for raisin g the boots and shovels; and. secondly, it consists of making theA feed-slide, intwo or more sections,in order free motion and Vprevent it In the 'accompanying dra-wings., Figure Iris an end view ot' a portion of a-wh'ea-tfdrill,
showing the three gear-wheels engaged with Fig; 2'i`s a similar-view,'showingupper wheel.4 Fig. 3 isasectiofn ot' a portion t otf'a full-sizedfeed-slide detached from the ma.'-
chine. A-Fig. 4 is-a detached view of the ec-A centric, byY means otwh'ich'thegear-'wheels are of my machine theframe The upper gear-wheeLU, is :placed upon the of the traveling wheel of the machine. The
.middle gear-wheel, E, is `placed upon an eccentric-pin, F, a short distance from 'the center ot' the shaft G, Fig. 4. This pin hasa peculiarleccentric motion, as indicated in red '.1ines, Fig. 4, and as will be further explained.
The .bar usually employed to raise the boots is attachedin the common way to two arms,
O, and is raised and lowered by nieansof the handle or lever I. `(Seen down in Fig. 1 and up V- in Fi g. 2.) As the litting-barandbootsare raised the arm Ov rotates the shaft G, and thus moves the eccentric-pin F, as above mentioned. This i motion carries the wheel E down and throws it out of gear with Vthe wheel C. As the le` j'ver I is again'v depressed the' liftingfbar and boots are lowered into working position, and
. the ,samemoti'on elevates the'gear-wheel E and engages it with the upper wheel,(.l. Thus are brought together.
i l centricvpin is employed. shaft D ot'. the l'eedlroller or stirrer, and the i lower wheel, K, is attached to the hub or axle theboots or shovels and the feed-.gearare -both operated by the same motion. It will be 4 observed that this Vmovement of :the middle gearfwheel prevents the necessity of moving the hopper, (as is 'commonwith wheat-drills,)
and is a 4very great improvement,
' My improvement in the feedfslide is shown, Vin Fig. 3,--which is a longitudinal section of a portion of a feed.
I propose to cast the i'eed-slidein `two parts or pieces, united by a cross section or joint near thel center. The two pieces L andM may have a joint, P," where the endsot' the pieces The two parts lare locked together by a coupling-piece, N, cast withpins it n, and entering holes in thetwo pieces of theslide. This construction of slide will prevent binding, and thus facilitate the easy working of'thef slide it' the plates are. Y warped in casting or afterward or otherwise? inclined to-bind npontheguides. -The slide 4rnayfbe A-inade in three'or Vmore Apieces'' witheut departing l'roin my invention.
l 1 I ain aware that leed-slides have been divvided longitudinally or made intwo pieces having the full length vofthe slide. Thereffore I do not claim snch divided or sectional slide, but conline lny cla'ilnsfto feed-slides. with erolss4sections, as above described.
j I do Anot broadly claim the use oli three4 wheels for ihrowin g the feed arrangement into gear and lout of gear, but confinenly invent-ion to the use of such thr'ee Wheels when` lllaving' thus fully described my invention,
what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of `the United States, is
A1. The use ol the above-described eccentric- `pin for supporting the Iwheel E and throwing the saine ont et' gear and into gear, substantially as set forth.
2. Theabore-described arrangement ot' the three gear-wheels C', E, and- K with vthe stationary hopper, substantially as specified. v3. The conibinaton'of the gear-wheel'E with `the eccentric-pin and arm O, when operated si- `multaneouslywith the elevation or depression of the boots, as described.
4. A feedslide when cast -or made in` two `pieces or sections, locked.or coupled together and operated as one slide, substantially as de-` scribed.
' 1 JACOB B. GROWELL.
