1 UNITED STATES PATENT Orricn.
JESSE KIMBALL, OF NEW LYIADRID, MISSOURI.
ROAD-CART.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 482,579, dated September 13, 1892. Application filed May 10, 1892. $eria1No.4=32,456. No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J ESSE KIMBALL, of New Madrid, in the county of New Madrid and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Road-Cart, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in road-carts, such as are provided with two wheels; and the object of my invention is to produce a carriage of this description which will run very smoothly upon any ordinary road, but is especially adapted for rough roads, and in which the body is freely suspended, so as to swing in any direction and ride very easily, and which also is provided with an easy means of adjustment by which the body may be held so as to be properly balanced and to enable it to ride nicely.
To this end myinvention consists in a roadcart, the construction of which will be hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a broken side elevation of a road-cart embodying my invention with the wheels removed and the axle in section. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a broken rear elevation showing in detail the hanging and shifting mechanism.
The box or body may be of any approved kind, and it is suspended on the springs 11, which are curved upward. and are secured at the center by means of clips 12 to blocks 13, which are carried on the axle 14, this being adapted to be journaled in wheels in the usual way. From the free ends of the springs ll are suspended links 15, the links having forks 16 at their upper ends and forks 17 at their lower ends, and the forks 16 and 17 are arranged at right angles to each other, so that the connection with the springs will enable the body to, move either backward and forward or sidewise. The forks 16 are pivoted to the springs 11, and the forks 17 carry de pending links 18, which terminate at their lower ends in eyes 19, adapted to support the eyes 20 of the cross-rods 21, which are arranged near the front and rear ends of the box 10 and project from the sides thereof, the rods being journaled in suitable bearings 22 on the under side of the box.
The forward ends of the springs 11 have upwardly and forwardly extending leaves 23, which are secured by means of bolts in the slots 25 of the curved crank-arms 24, these arms being arranged on opposite sides of the box and having their lower ends fixed to a shaft 26, which extends transversely beneath the box, and is journaled, as shown at 27, to the under sides of the shafts 28, these being of the usual kind, and clamped to the axle 14, as shown at 29. A shifting-lever is fixed to one side of the shaft 26 and extends rearward parallel with the box 10, the lever having a series of perforations 31 therein, and
the lever is held to swing vertically in a keeper 32, which is provided with perforations 33, adapted to register with the perforations 31 of the lever 30 and to receive a pin or screw 84E, by which the lever 30 is held in a desired position. It will be seen that by moving the lever 30 upward the front end of the box may be depressed, and by moving it downward the front end of the box may be raised, and when the box is in the downward position it is held there by the pin or screw 3st. The object of this arrangement is to enable the box to be properly balanced, so that it will haul easily and ride easily, and it will be understood that this position will necessarily vary with the weight carried by the box, and the mechanism described provides for a very exact adjustment.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. The combination, with the running-gear and the box freely suspended thereon, of a shaft journaled beneath the box and carried by the running-gear, crank-arms secured to the shaft and connected with the box, and a lever mechanism for turning and adjusting the crank-shaft, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the running'gear and the box suspended from springs carried by the running-gear, of a shaft journaled beneath the box, crank-arms secured to the shaft and connected with the box-springs, a
lever secured to the shaft, and a fastening device to fix the position of the lever, substantially as described.
3. Aroad-cart comprising the axle, the shafts secured thereto and having a transverse rockshaft having upwardly-projecting arms slotted at their upper ends and provided with an adjustable operating lever, the longitudinally-extending springs secured at their mid-
