Description
UNrTnD STATES PATENT OFFICE.,
VILLIAM COKAYNE, OF SEDALIA, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD TO JAMES C. SHAFOR, OF SAME PLACE.
NUT-LOCK.
SPECIFICATON forming part of Letters Patent No. 482,518, dated September 18, 1892.
Application iiled May 31, 1892. Serial No. 435,023. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM CoKAYNn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sedalia, in the county of Clinton and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Nut Look, of which the following is a specication.
Myinvention relates to that class of inventions known as nut-locks, and has for its object to provide an efficient device for the purpose which shall be strong and durable in use and cheap in tirst cost.
With this object in view my invention consists in certain details of construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, all of which will be more fully described hereinafter and the specific points of novelty in which will be pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the slotted plate. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal section.
Like letters of reference indicate like or corresponding parts in the several views of the drawings.
A designates the track-rail, B B the bolts, and O C the nuts for said bolts.
E is a locking-plate, of spring metal, circularly perforated at each end, as shown, to slip over and slip upon the neck of the boltsB B and under the nuts O O', (see Fig. 1,) said plate E having a central longitudinal rectangular slot c of predetermined length in line with and intermediate of the nuts O C', which are held in a locked position by the two spring locking-plates D D', respectively provided at their outer ends with a vertically-upturned tongue a, which abuts against the adjacent face of the nut C or C', as the case may be. This tongue doesnot stand in a strictly perpendicular line or plane, but inelines obliquely forward sufficiently to permit it to spring in or out against the nut in order to accommodate variations in the latter, as will be readily understood.
The adjacent ends of the locking-plates D D are pivotally joined by a rivet-pin h, secured in the slot cof the plateE by its iianged or headed lower extremity, thus preventing any lateral displacement of the pivot-pin, but permitting longitudinal motion. The other ends of locking-plates D D are prevented from swinging laterally by means of rivetpins e e', respectively passing through said ends and fastened into slot c by thin hanged lower extremities, similarly to the rivet-pin b. My invention operates as follows: PlateE is slipped in position over bolts B B The nuts C C are th en screwed on. Vhen the plateE is first put on, rivet-pins e e are in place; but the rivet-pin b is not yet headed, so that locking-plates D D are free to slip back and forth in slot c, and when nuts C O are properly secured the locking-plates D D are jammed up in place with tonguesact against the sides of the nuts and then the rivet h is headed, thus rigidly holding locking-plates D D in the same horizontal plane, the slot c acting as the locking medium for the looking-plates.
The lock can be easily opened by exerting a combined outward and upward force with a suitable tool under the center of the plate E, thus springing it and the locking-plates Having thus described my invention, what I claim :is-
1. In a nut-lock, the combination, with a pluralityof nuts andbolts,of alongitudinallyslotted plate iitting over the said bolts and connecting a pair of the same and a plurality of spring looking-plates movably secured in the slot of the slotted plate at their forward ends and pivotally secured together at their rear or abutting ends in said slot, substantially as described.
2. In a nut-lock, the combination, with. the rail A, bolts B B', and nuts C C', of the connecting-plate'Rfitting over any two adjacent bolts and having a central longitudinal slot c for the locking-plates, the locking-plates D D', secured in said slot, the rivet-pin b, joining the rear extremities of saidlocking-plates, and the rivetsee, holding said locking-plates in said slot, as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as Iny own I have hereto afliXed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM COKAYNE. Vitnesses:
H. B. COLLINS, L. M. GRovER.
