UNDERGROUND TROLLEY.
SPECIFIGATION'fOrming part of Letters Patent No. 482,506, dated September 13, 1892.

To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OSEPH FISCHER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cleveland, county of Ouyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Underground Trolley Systems for Electric Railways, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the trolley system of electric railways; and it consists in the new constructionsand combinations, substantially as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a cross-section of a roadway and conduit, showing my new system of trolley connection. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same.
A in both the figures represents yokes of a similar character to those used in cable railways designed for supporting the track and slot rails. The side walls of the conduit may be composed of concrete and cement in the usual manner or otherwise, as may be most expedient. At suitable intervals in the conduit are provided cross-bars B, of wood or other suitable material, for supporting the electric conductor.
0 O are glass insulating bell-shaped supports for the conductor, fixed on wooden pegs or posts attached to the central parts of the said cross-bars beneath the trolley-slot.
D is an electric conductor, which I prefer to make of pipe or tubing suitably galvanized for protection from rust or corrosion. Itis attached to the apeXes of said insulated supports 0 C by rivets or other suitable means. The object of thus constructing and attaching the conductor,it will be seen, is to thoroughly insulate it. In the said pipe is also provided a feed-wire.
E is a trolley-arm to be suitably attached to a car-tru ck for conducting electricity to the motor, consisting of a tube or pipe containing an insulated wire e. To the lower end of the tube is attached the trolley-wheel F, which is in electrical connection with the said wire e and which rides upon the conductor D.
G is a bell-shaped protector fixed to the lower end of the trolley-arm designed to shield the trolley-wheel.
H is a tube placed loosely on the tube E, resting upon the shoulder formed by the neck of the protector G, and is held by a collar I on the tube E. The purpose of the tube H is to provide a revolving antifriction-shield to the trolley-arm in the slot to avoid the wear or grinding of the trolley-arm as it moves along between slot-rails.
J J are depending plates fixed to the truck and situated one before and one behind the trolley-arm, extending down into the slotv and moving therein. They are designed as clearers for keeping the slot clean and free from obstructions such as dirt orice--which would interfere with the movements of the trolleyarm and disengage it from the electric con ductor.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-- 1. In an underground trolley system, the combination, with the depending trolley-arm E, having a trolley-wheel F, and the electric conductor D, of the antifriction-sleeve H, fitted loosely on the trolley-arm for protecting the arm from wear in the slot, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In an underground trolley system, the combination of conduit A,insulat0rs C O, supports B B, electric conductor D, trolley-arm E, trolley-wheel F, shield G, antifriction-sleeve H, and depending clearers J J, constructed to operate substantially as described.
