J. K. MAGEE. CONVERTIBLE ATOMIZER AND SPRAYER.
No. 482,407. Patented Sept. 13, 1892.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN K. MAGEE, OF TOLEDO, OHIO.
CONVERTIBLE ATOMIZER AND SPRAYER.
$PEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 482,407, dated September 13, 1892.
Application filed January 27, 1892. Serial No. 419,398- (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN K. MAGEE, of Toledo, county of Lucas, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Convertible Atomizers and Sprayers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the in vention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same,.reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to a convertible atomizer and sprayer, and has for its object to form an attachment for a compressible bulb, whereby I may form an atomizer for administering pulverulent remedies for catarrhal and bronchial aifectionsbyinhalation through the nostrils.
A further object is to form an attachment of the character described that shall be convertible to form an atomizer for administering pulverulent remedies and also be capable of adaptation for spraying perfumes, 850.
With these objects in view the invention consists, broadly, in forming a top for a compressible bulb with two foraminous disks located within the top, one of the disks being removable to allow of the insertion or removal of a fabric packing to form an atomizer or sprayer, respectively.
In the drawings, Figure l is an elevation of a complete convertible atomizer and sprayer. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the top arrayed as an atomizer and also showing the manner of securing the same in the bulb, there being a nasal douche attachment shown in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section of the top arrayed as a sprayer and also showing a section of the bulb. Fig. 4 is a vertical section of a portion of the top with the movable foraminous disk lowered and the interposed fabric packing slightly elevated at the sides to more fully disclose the same.
1 designates the bulb, formed of rubber or other compressible material, into the top of which is insertedthe stem 2 of a top 3, the top being held in place by an enlargement 4, formed upon the lower end of the stem around which the rubber of the bulb compresses. Top 3 is formed with the stem, heretofore referred to, which is integral with a cup-shaped shell 5, having an exterior screw-thread, there being a flanged ring 6, screw-threaded interiorly, which is screwed upon the shell 5, there being two foraminous disks interposed between the top of the shell and the flange 7 of ring 6. The upper foraminous disk 8 is pressed firmly against the flanged overlapping portionof ring 6, while the lower foraminous disk 9 is removable to allow of inserting a packing 10 of fabric, when by screwing the cap down firmly the packing is secured between the disks, when the top as thus arrayed acts as an atomizer of the pulverulent medicinal material contained within the bulb, which when compressed forces the pulverulent material through both disks and the interposed fabric material, thereby allowing noth ing but the impalpable portion of the medicinal material contained within the bulb in condition for inhalation. When arrayed as an atomizer, I may screw a nasal douche 11 into the threaded flange of the cap to render the same more convenient for administering catarrhal remedies, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 2.
In order to convert the top into a sprayer the ring is unscrewed and the fabric packing removed, when the disk is again put in proper position and the ring screwed to place, when remedial or perfumed liquids may be sprayed by compressing the bulb.
It will be seen by the foregoing description that I have provided an atomizer for administering pulverulent medicaments as well as a douche for administering liquid remedies.
What I claim is-- 1. In combination, a compressible bulb, a top portion secured thereon having a plurality of foraminons diaphragms, and an intermediate removable fabric packing.
2. In a convertible atomizer and sprayer, a compressible bulb, a top portion secured thereon having a cup-shaped portion, and a flanged ring upon the same, in combination with an upper and lower foraminous diaphragm and an intermediate removable fabric packing, and a douche removably secured within the flange of the ring.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I hereby affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN K. MAGEE.
Witnesses:
CARROLL J. WEBSTER, GRACE E. LEHANEY.
