SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 482,336, dated September 13, 1892 Application filed December 1, 1891. SerialNo. 413,742. (No model.)

To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY GORDON CADY, a citizen of the United States,residing at Pine Bluff, in the county of Jefferson and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to toys.

It consists of a figure having its interior hollowed to form a chamber, an inilatable receptacle (which is empty in its normal position) located' in the chamber, means for lilling the iniiatable receptacle from the exterior of the figure, and an opening in the top and bottom of the figure connected with the chamber to permit the inux and outflow of air and Water as the elastic air-receptacle is inflated and emptied.

Its object, other than to provide an amusing and novel toy, is to prove beneficial to health by the exercise of the lungs, which are necessarily subjected to more vigorous action by its use.

A further object of the invention is to enable the person using it to tell the relative increase in the capacity of the lungs from time to time by means of a series of numbers arranged in a graduated scale on the exterior of the figure, as will be more fully described hereinafter.

In the drawings, Figure lis a side elevation of the invention, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof.

In carrying out the invention, A represen ts a ligure made of some suitable material heavy enough to sink when the air-receptacle therein is empty. This figureA is of some desired shape, and has a chamber B therein of a size sufficiently large to contain the air of the lungs. Located within the chamber B is an inliatable air-receptacle C, having connected thereto a hose or tube D, the said hose extending through an opening a, in the top of the figure to the exterior thereof, its outer end serving as a mouthpiece, into which air is introduced to be conveyed to the air-receptacle C, the opening a being larger in diameter than the tube. The air-receptacle C when inflated is designed to fill the chamber B. The lower end of figure A'is formed heavier than the upper end thereof, the purpose of which is to retain the figure in an upright position when submerged. Near the lower end of figure A is an opening b, connecting with the chamber B to permit the influx and outfiow of Water as the inflatable air-receptacle is filled and emptied. On the exterior of the figure A, at c, is a series of numbers arranged in a graduated scale, increasing in value toward the lower end of the ligure.

The operation of the invention is as follows: The figure is introduced into a vessel containing Water and entirely submerged by reason of the Weight thereof sinking it sufficiently to bring the opening h below the level of the water, causing the Water to enter the chamber B and force the air therein out through the opening a. The operator then inflates the air-receptacle O by blowing into the tube or hose D connected therewith, thus causing the displacement of the water in the chamber B by the air in the receptacle O,

causing the ligure to rise above the surface of the Water, the numbers on the exterior of the iigure becoming visible and increasing in value as the figure ascends. When the operator has exerted the full capacity of his lungs, the number on the level of the Water indicates their relative capacity.

I-Iaving thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a toy, a ligure formed with a chamber and openings at the top and bottom thereof, an air-receptacle within the chamber, and a tube connected at one end to the air-receptacle and extending through the opening in the top to the exterior thereof for inflating the air-receptacle.
