TYPE-CASTING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 481,760, dated August 30, 1892.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS K. HINSHILL- WOOD, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Type Casting Machines, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.

It further consists of novel mechanism for removing the type from the mold.
It further consists of means for trimming or rubbing off the shoulders on the face end of the type.
It further consists of the combination of parts hereinafter described.

Referring to the drawings, A designates the frame of a type-casting machine, consisting of a base portion B and a bed 0, the latter having supporting plates or uprights D, which are firmly secured to the base B by the screw-bolts E. A driving-shaft F is mounted in the standards G, secured on the said base B, and has thereon the belt-pulley H and the hand-Wheel J for rotating the same.
K designates a fire-pot or reservoir for molten metal, secured on the sliding bed L,which latter is movable in the ways M to and from the bed 0 of the frame A.
Pivoted to the top wall of the reservoir K is a lever N for operating the plunger P of the reservoir. The outer end of the said lever N is provided with a roller Q, which is engaged by a cam R on the driving-shaft F, so as to lower the said lever, and thereby lower the plunger and force a supply of molten material through the nozzle S of the reservoir.
The contents of the reservoir are heated by any suitable means but as the parts of the reservoir and the mechanism for operating the same are old and well known and are not claimed per se the same are not further described herein.
T designates a mold adapted to be attached to the bed 0 of the frame and held firmly therein. The mold T is composed of the bodysections U and U, which are separated, so as to form between them a space V, in which the body of the type is cast, and the lower sections l/V IV, having the intervening and connecting side pieces X X, between which operates the rising-and-falling sliding body piece Y of the mold, which is also adapted to enter the space V, rising so as to be flush with So the top of the sections U and U, for a purpose hereinafter explained.
To raise the sliding piece Y, alever Z is employed, the same having an axis K which is journaled in a standard A on the base B and has one of its ends provided with an adjustable stud 13', adapted to contact with and be lowered by acam C on the driving-shaft F. The other end of said lever has an adjustable stud or cushion D, adapted to contact 0 with and raise the said sliding piece. A spring E, secured to the sliding piece Y and the base B, normally lowers the said piece, keepingit in contact with said stud D, which consists of an elastic head and a screw-stem, the latter being inserted in said lever Z. To adjust the position of the end of the lever which is in contact with the sliding piece Y, and thereby regulate the descent of the latter, and consequently the depth of the recess V, and thereby the size of the body of the type, an adjustable stop is provided, the
same consisting of a bolt F, vertically movable in a hollow block G and having a protecting stud H on its side, which works in a slot J of the said block. In one side of the block G is a recess forming a shoulder K, between which and the projecting end of the stud H a metallic strip or piece L of the size of the font of type to be cast is placed, thus lowering the bolt F, so as to properly regulate its position, and thereby that of the lever Z and the body-piece Y, when the type is being cast. A screw M in an openingin the side of the block G has its inner end hearing against the bolt F to clamp the same in place, and a spring N in the block serves to keep the bolt raised therein.
P designates a horizontally-sliding piece or arm located above the bed 0 and provided with a depending block Q, movable on the body-sections U U of the mold and adapted to cover the recess V thereof while the molten metal enters the same from the reservoir K.
In the front end of the arm P is secured a block Q which extends below the front end of the arm P, so as to form a shoulder at P to receive a type when the latter is raised to the top of the mold. A'top plate R secured to the arm P, covers the opening through which the block Q is inserted.
To adjust the block Q", which is movable vertically in said arm P, the latter is provided with a longitudinal groove R, in which a clamping-arm S is movable, said arm having an inclined or beveled under face S on its front end, adapted to contact with and bear on an inclined top portion P of the block Q. The spring T, connected with the under side of the arm P and bearing against a recessed portion of the under side of the block Q", keeps the latter in place. To operate the arm S, the same is provided with a projecting screw-bolt V, passing through a slot X in the side of the arm P and provided with a head adapted when rotated to bind against the outer face of said arm P, and thereby hold the arm S in place in said arm P. The arm P is mounted on a stud Y, projecting horizontally from a block Z, so as to rotate thereon, and the block Z is mounted on a vertical pin A of a sliding arm B which is horizontally movable in the ways 0 on the bed 0. To the side of the block Z is pivotally secured a spring D which is adapted to bear against a pin E on the arm B and when in engagement therewith prevents the turning of the block Z on the pin A thereby keeping the arm P in line during its reciprocating movements, but permitting when it is released by raising it above the top of the pin E by means of the knob or handle D on the said spring the turning of the block Z on the pin A and thereby the removing of the arm P from over the parts U and U of the mold, so that the said arm P may be rotated on the stud Y, whereby all parts thereof may be readily accessible for cleansing or other purposes. The opening in the block Z through which the pin A is passed is elongated in horizontal section, so that the block can be adjusted laterally relative to the arm B The block is secured in place, when so adjusted, by means of a plate Q which is secured on said block and which has an opening in which the pin A snugly fits and the slots R for the insertion of the fasteningscrews S A spiral spring S on the pin A bearing against the plate Q and a nut Qon said pin holds the block in close contact with a nut Q on the pin.
To operate the arm 13, and thereby the arm P, in a horizontal direction, the said arm 13 is provided with a depending lug F movable in a slot F in the bed 0, and to which is attached a pivoted block G adapted to fit and move in a recessed portion H of a lever J. The said lever is pivoted at its lower end to the frame A of the machine and has an adjustable pin K projecting from one side and having a roller thereon in contact with a cam L on the driving-shaft F, so that the rotation of said shaft with the said cam moves the said lever, and thereby the said arms B and P, in one direction. To return the leverJ and thereby the said arms B and P, a lever M is pivoted to a side plate D of the frame and connected at one end to the lever J by a rod N and at the other end by a spring P to the base 13. Toinsnre the initial portion of the return movement, the lever M is provided with a projecting arm Q which is adapted to be engaged by the cam L on the shaft at the end of the forward movement of the lever J so as to operate the lever M and start the return of the said lever J An adjustable screw M working in a socket N on the bed 0, limits the return movement of the arm B To insure the close contact of the blocks Q and Q with the top of the mold, the front end of an upper attachment or portion P of the arm P is beveled, at K and the horizontal flange L of a vertical attachment M of the frame is provided with an opening having therein a stem N carrying in its bifurcated lower end a roller P adapted to ride on the top of the portion P and be pressed or forced against the same by the spring R, which is attached to the flange L. Secured to the upper end of the stem is acam-leverS, adapted to raise the said roller from contact with said portion P of the arm P.
To limit the forward movement of the arm P, astop consisting of a wedge T, with a stem vertically adjustable in the flange L, is provided, said wedge having an inclined face adapted to contact with the beveled end K.
The matrix R (which is of any usual and well-known form) for the face portion of the type is horizontally secured in a piece or holder S by means of a plate U attached to a clamping-screw piece T The said piece S is fastened to an arm U by means of a vertical dovetail connection and a binding-screw V The arm U has a projecting portion W in IIO which an adjusting-screw X operates, the same bearing against one end of the matrix R The arm U is provided with a stem or journal Y, which is fitted in a block Z movable on a dovetail rib or flange A on the bed 0, and is adjusted in position by means of the vertical screws B which work in the block Z one being on each side of the journal Y and each having the under face of its head bearing against the top of the arm U A clampingscrew C in the side of the block Z binds the journal Y ofthe arm U in place. To move the block Z and thereby the matrix R to and from the mold, the said block is provided with a vertical depending stud D mounted in a projecting side portion E thereof and having thereon a roller F which is engaged by a beveled or inclined portion G3 on the side of a sliding bar H The said bar is provided with hearings in the vertical plates D of the frame and in a hanger E of said frame and has a depending lug J which carries an adjustable pin K provided with a roller at one end, which is engaged by a cam L on the drivingshaft F. A spring M secured to the frame and to the arm J 3 on the bar H returns the latter at the end of its forward movement. An adjustable screw H movable in a socket J on a plate D, limits the movement of the sliding bar on its return.
Pivoted in a block T on the bed 0 and in advance of the mold is a Hat plate T having its front edge normally raised above the top of the mold by means of a spring U located beneath the same, whereby when the type have been advanced toward the breaker V by the block Q they are kept from being drawn back on the said bed on the return movement of the arm P. Secured to a suitable support W on the bed 0 in advance of the plate T and to the block T are the adjustable knives or cutters X for rubbing the shoulder or burr on the face of the type. The said support W is vertically adjustable on a stud Y on the base B, being guided on said stud by the pins Z and clamped in place by the nuts A. On the side of the said support and opposite the cutters is a projecting arm, which forms the breaker V for removing the jets B of the type as the latter are forced against the same by the movement of the arm P.
O designates a pusher consisting of aplate having its, front edge at right angles with the line of direction of travel of thetype from the mold and projecting above the bed 0, on which the type are dropped after being operated on by the cutters X The said pusher is connected with the sliding bar H by means of an angular depending stem l which is fitted in an opening in a block N mounted on the sliding bar H and guided in an opening in the upright portion D of the frame of the machine, so that the movements of the said bar are imparted to the pusher, and the type there by advanced on the frame to the dresser D which latter is provided with the upper and lower knives E and F respectively, the upper knives being secured to an adjustable plate G movable in guides or ways on a standard H secured to a suitable part of the frame; but as the dresser per 86 forms no part of this invention, not being claimed herein, and as any dresser may be employed in connection with the other parts of the mechanism herein described no further description of the same is believed to be necessary. A latch J 4 is pivoted to the side of the lever Z and has its free end provided with a concave under portion normally resting on the shaft or axis K of the lever, between the lever and the support, so as to keep the said lever in place, but when sufficiently lifted or raised from said axis permits a sidewise movement of the lever on its shaft, so as to free it from contact with the sliding piece Y, and thereby allow the further lowering or the removal of the said sliding piece from the mold.
In the upper face of the section U of the mold are the recesses L for holding oil or other lubricating material, and the walls of the recess V of the mold are of V shape adjacent to the nozzle S of the reservoir.
The operation of the machine is as follows: The various parts are so timed that when the block Q is over the recessV of the mold, the sliding piece Y being lowered, and the block Z with the face of the matrix R against the mold the molten metal is forced from the reservoir in the usual and well-known manner of devices of this character into the said recess to form the body of the type. The ro-- tation of the shaft F, with the cam L operates the sliding bar H so that the inclined face G bears against the roller F and as the latter rides on the said inclined face, the block Z with the matrix R is removed from the mold, thereby freeing or exposing the face end of the type. The rotation of the shaft F brings the cam G into contact with the stud B, operating the lever Z, so as to raise the sliding piece Y, and thereby lifting the newly-cast type in the recess V to the level of the top of the mold, where it is received in the recessed or shouldered portion P formed by a lower portion of the front of the block Q and the lower front end of the arm P, the arm P having been drawn back by the action of the le ver J The further rotation of the shaft F brings the cam L in contact with the pin K of the lever J so as to advance the arm P, and with it the block Q so that the latter ad vances the type on the mold over the plate T the front edge of which keeping the type in alignment toand past the knives or cutters X so that two opposite shoulders on one end of each type is rubbed by said cutters- At the same time that a type is raised from the recess V the cam L is also released from the pin K of the sliding bar H so that the cam G3 no longer bears against the roller F and the block Z is moved by the spring G so that the matrix R is again brought in contact with the mold. pusher 0 moves the type that have been 0perated on by the cutters X toward the dresser D. As soon as the cam O is removed from the stud B the spring E draws the sliding piece Y downward, the said piece being limited or controlled in said movement by contact with the lever Z and the adjusted position of the bolt F in the block G. The cam L is of such shape as to hold the lever J and thereby the arm P, in position, so that the block Q is over the recess V during the time of the discharge of the molten metal into said recess from the reservoir K, after which it releases the said lever, so that the said parts may be drawn back by the action of the spring P lever M and rod N the contact of the cam L with the arm Q insuring the initial or start of the said return movement. At the same time the spring M draws back the sliding bar H with the pusher C to its normal position. The parts are successively operated, as herein described, so that type are antomatically cast, raised, and moved on the mold one by one without any interference of the parts of the device or the assistance of the workman. The slot D in the back plate I) is for the purpose of permitting a closer approach of the lever J to the plate, the nut or head of the connecting-bolt of the rod N and the said lever moving during the working of the said lever in the said slot. The pusher O is connected to the bar H by means of a block N which is mounted on the said bar and works in an opening in a side plate D and in a recess in the dresser-frame A A strong spring B connected to studs 0 and D on the block and the bar, respectively,
causes the said block and bar to normally opcrate in unison. When it is required to stop the movement of the pusher without stopping the bar, the catch E is employed, the same consisting of a sliding pin movable in bosses on the under side of the bed 0 and having its inner end engaging in an opening N in the said block N so as to stop the movement of the said block, which is mounted on a. reduced or shouldered portion N of said bar, and The front end of the block T is provided with a curved bar F for guiding the type as they are dropped or passed downward from the said block T to the pusher. A curved arm G pivoted to the dresser-frame and held in place by a spring H closes one end of the type passage-way at the front end of the block T The base portion B of the block Gis adjustable on the base 13, being movable on the rib. K on said base and having a slot L through which a clamping-screw M is passed into an opening in the rib. A binding-screw N prevents the screw M from turning. A screw V in the end of the lever Z binds the stud D in place therein.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination witha type-mold having a movable body-piece therein, an operatinglever adapted to bear against said body-piece,
and an adjustable stop with which said lever contacts for regulating the length of movement of the said body-piece of the mold, consisting of a hollow block having a slot in one side, a pin movable in said block and provided with a stud working in the said slot, a spring bearing against said bolt, and a clam pingscrew for said bolt, substantially as described.
2. In combination with a type-mold having a movable body-piece therein, an operatinglever adapted to raise said body-piece, a hollow block having a slot in one side and a recess in the same side, forming a shoulder, a pin movable in said block and provided with a stud working in the said slot and adapted to stop the downward movement of the said lever, a metallic strip or pieceinterposed between said stud and shoulder, and a clamping-screw for said bolt, substantially as described.
3. In combination with a type-mold having a movable body-piece therein, an operatinglever adapted to raise said body-piece, a hollow block having a slot in one side and a recess in the same side, forming a shoulder, a pin in said block adapted to limit the downward movement of said lever, a stud on said bolt working in said slot, 3. spring normally raising said bolt, a strip of suitable material interposed between said shoulder and stud, and a clamping-screw for said bolt, substantially as described.
4. In a type-casting machine, a stationary mold having a recess therein, a body-piece vertically movable in said recess, an operating-lever provided with a cushion adapted to contact with said movable body piece, a spring secured to said body-piece for automatically lowering the same, and an adjustable stop adapted to be in contact with said lever, limiting its downward movement, said parts being combined substantially as described.
5. In a type-casting machine, a mold having a sliding body-piece, the sliding arm P, with a longitudinal groove, the block Q in said arm and having a recessed portion on its under side for engaging the type, the movable piece S in said groove and provided with an inclined under face on its front end, a spring secured to said piece P and bearing against the block Q and a binding-screw for said piece S, said parts being combined substantially as described.
6. In atype-casting machine, a mold having a recess therein, a movable body-piece in said recess, the sliding arm P, with the depending block Q, forming a top wall for the said recess, and the block (2*, adjustable in said arm and having a recessed under face for engaging the type, said parts being combined substantially as described.
'7. In a type-casting machine, a mold with a movable body-piece therein, an arm with a block movable on said mold and adapted to form a top wall for a recess therein, a block ITO I adjustable in said arm and having a recessed under face for engagement of the type, a reclprocating arm movable in ways on the bed of the machine and havinga stud projecting therefrom, and a block secured on said stud and connected with said first-mentioned arm, said parts being combined substantially as described.
8. In a type-casting machine, a mold with a recess therein, a sliding body-piece verti cally movable in said recess, the arm P, with depending block Q, movable on said mold, the block Q adjustable in said arm and havlng a recessed under face to engage the type, and mechanism, substantially as described, connected with said arm for reciprocating the same, said parts being combined substantially as described.
9. In atype-casting machine, a mold having a movable body-piece therein, the arm P, with depending block Q, movable on said mold and forming a top Wall for a recess therein, the block Q held in said arm P and having a recessed under face, a block Z, having a stud on which the arm P is mounted, an arm having a pin on which the block Z is secured, the spring D attached to said block, and the pin E against which said spring is adapted to bear, said parts being combined substantially as described.
10. In a type-casting machine, a mold with a type-recess therein, mechanism, substantially as described, for lifting the type from said recess to the top of said mold, an arm for removing said type from said mold, a supporting-block to which said arm is rotatingly attached, a reciprocating arm on which the block is rotatingly mounted, and a spring attached to said block for keeping said arms and block in line, said parts being combined substantially as described.
11. In a type-casting machine, a mold having a movable body-piece therein, the arm P, with depending blocks Q and Q the latter having a recessed under face, the block Z, with the stud Y, the reciprocating arm B movable in ways on the frame of the machine and provided with the pin A on which the block Z is adapted to turn, and the spring D secured to the said block and bearing against a pin or projection on the frame of the machine, said parts beingcombined substantially as described.
12. In a type-casting machine,a mold having a movable body-piece, the reciprocating arm P, having an inclined upper portion at its front end and provided with the depending block Q and the adjustable block Q", the latter having a recessed under face adapted to engage the type, the wedge T with inclined under surface, and the downwardly-springpressed roller P said parts being combined substantially as described.
13. In a type-casting machine, a mold having a movable body-piece, a reciprocating arm having an inclined portion on its upper face near its front end and provided with a block for covering a recess in said mold, a block held by said arm and adapted to engage and move the type when on the mold, a wedge supported on the frame of the machine and adapted to engage the inclined face of said arm, and a roller adapted to bear on said arm, said parts being combined substantially as described.
14. In a type-casting machine, a mold having a recess therein and a movable piece for removing the type from said recess, a reciprocating arm having an inclined portion on its upper face near its front end and provided with a block for covering said recess and'a block for moving the type on said mold, a wedge adapted to engage said inclined face, and a spring-pressed roller bearing down wardly against said arm, and a cam-lever for lifting said roller, said parts being combined substantially as described.
15. In a type-casting machine, a frame, a mold having a movable body-piece therein, the arm P, with the depending block Q, adapted to cover a recess in said mold, the type-removing block Q in said arm, a reciprocating arm movable in ways on the frame and having a depending lug, mechanism connecting said arms, a lover, a block pivoted to said lug and located in a recess in said lever, and a driving-shaft with a cam thereon operating said lever, said parts being combined substantially as described.
16. A frame, a mold with a'recess therein and a body-piece movable in said recess, an arm with means connected therewith for covering said recess and for engaging said type 011 said mold, mechanism, including a lever, connected with said arm for advancing the same, and a lever pivoted to the frame and connected by a rod with said operating-lever and by a spring with the frame for withdrawing the type-moving arm, said parts being combined substantially as described.
17. A frame, a mold with a type-recess therein and a body-piece movable in said recess, an arm with means connected therewith for covering said recess and for engaging the type when on the top of the mold, mechanism, including a lever, connected with said arm for advancing the same, and mechanism, including a lever, connected with said lever of the advancin mechanism for withdrawing said arm,said leverof the withdrawing mechanism having a projecting arm adapted to be engaged by a cam on the driving-shaft of the machine, said parts being combined substantially as described.
18. In a type-casting machine, a frame, a mold having a type-recess therein, and a bodypiece vertically movable in said recess, a block movable on a track on said frame to and from said mold, the arm U with stem adjustably fitted in said block and a projecting portion W a holder having a vertical adjustment in said arm by means of a dovetail connection and provided with a horizontal recess extending across one end thereof, a matrix fitted in said recess, and clamping-screws in said holder and projecting portion for said matrix, said parts being combined substantially as described.
19. In a type-casting machine, a frame, a mold having a movable body-piece, with operating means for raising the type to the top of the mold, a reciprocating arm with the block Q, forminga top wall for the type-recess, and the adjustable block Q", with shoulder P", and an adjustable support provided with cutters for rubbing the shoulders on opposite sides of the face end of the type, substantially as described.
20. In a type-casting machine, a frame, a mold with a movable body-piece therein, an oscillating lever for raising said body-piece journaled on a cylindrical pivot, and a latch pivoted to one side of said lever and having a recessed face on its free end, adapted to rest on the pivot of said oscillating lever, said parts being combined substantially as described.
21. In a type-casting machine, a frame, a mold with a recess therein, a vertically-movable body-piece in said recess, a reciprocating arm with the blocks Q, and Q connected therewith, the latter block for advancing the type on the mold, and a spring-actuated plate in the frame in advance of the mold, having its front edge normally raised, said parts being combined substantially as described.
22. In a type-casting machine, a pusher, a connecting-block, a sliding bar on which said block is mounted, a spring" connecting said block and bar, and a bolt workingin hangers on the machine-frame and with an end adapted to engage in a recess in said block, said parts being combined substantially as described.
