UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHRISTOP ER-o'fsnARP, or CHICAGO,.ILLINOIS.
APPARATUS FOR GENERATING OZONE.
srncmcanou forming part of Letters Patent No. 481,676, dated An us so, 1992. Application filed 8eptemher 18, 1891., Serial No. 406,073. (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that'l, CHRISTOPHER C. SHARP,
a citizen of the United States, residing'at Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Apparatgs for Generating Ozone, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved method of and apparatus for generating ozone and applying the same for therapentical purposes.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in the nature of a diagram showing a machine for generating electricity, a stool for the p tient, having a platform forming one termina and upon which the feet of the patient rest, and an ozone-generating attachment forming the other terminal; and Fig. 2, a central longitudinal section, enlarged, of the ozone-generator. Y The electric generator A maybe an induction-machine of well-known or suitable pat I; 31? convenientpower.
C is an ozone-generator, which I prefer to 'oonstruct.as illustrated in Fig. 2. The de- .vice there shown comprises a flask-shaped bulb, round in cross-section,of glass or other 35 suitable insulating material, and formed intwo sections tand t, screwed together. Thelarge end or base sof the bulb is Hat and provided with an opening 8', through its center,
and an opening 3'. The bulb terminates atits reduced end in an open flaring mouth '1'. The section t and the section t as far as the line a; are covered on their inner surfaces with foil or sheet metal q and serrated at the edge 0:, as shown. Within thebulb is an electrode in the form of a semi-spherical metal cup D, having a metal boss D, the cup being of less diameter than the inner-surface of .the bulb;
Through the center-of the boss D of thecupis an opening p for a screw p, whichextends through the opening 8' of the bulb into a support E of insulating material, which, as shown maybe suspended froma ceiling. The screw 12 operates to clamp the bulb between the cup and support to hold the parts in fixed relation'and the cup equidistant around its serrated edge from the inner. circumference of the bulb. The inner surface of the cup is provided with numerous metal points 0, which are formed by inserting tacks with pointed. heads through perforations in the cuP,.Which '6) thus also form points 0' on the outer side of the cup, as shown. One, of the conductingwires 11. from the electric generator extends through the opening s in the bulb, and is secured to the metal boss D, the ozone-genera tor thus forming one terminal of the genera.- tor A. a
F is a stool having a metal or met-al'covered foot-rest or platform F, and mounted upon insulating-supports y. 0n the platform F ----is a bindingpost an, to which the conductor m from the electric generator is secured, the platform thus forming the other terminal of the generator A. The relative positions of the ozone-generator and stool should be such that when the patient sits upon the latter the mouth'r of the bulb will be conveniently accessible to his mouth. I
In operation the patient places his mouth close to but out of contact with the mouth 'r of the ozone-generator, and the electric genorator being set in motion a current of electricity will pass between the terminals 0 and F through the body of the patient. The ef fect of the current passing from the points of the cup D is to generate, from the air in the bulb, ozone, which escapes at the mouth 1'. of the bulb and is inhaled bythe patient. The strong odor peculiar to ozone which is perceived when the apparatus is in operation, indicates a profuse generation of ozone, and the concentration and discharge thereof thorough the contracted mouth '1' causes the peculiar advantage of enabling the patient 'to obtain the full benefit of its etfects in a manner which can not be equaled by any other method of which I am aware.
In the practice of my invention I employ an induction-machine A, capable of generating a large quantity of electricity, and a patient sitting on the stool F with his month near the mouth of the bulb O and feet on the platformF,besides inhaling the ozone, afl?ords a conductor for the passageof alarge amount of electricity able elfect.
While I have thus far obtained the best results in the practice of my method with the use of the apparatus constructed as shown and described, the apparatus may be modi tied in the matter of details of construction of thejdevices for generating the current of electricity and for generating the ozone without departing from the spirit of myinvention.
What I claim as new, and .desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The method of simultaneously generatingozone and applyingit toa body; which consists in applying one terminal of the electric generator. to the body, maintaining the other terminal out of contact with the said body, generating ozone at the non-conducting terminal, and closing the circuit between the ozone-generating terminal and the body by the current of ozonized air, substantially as described.
2. In a machine for generating and applying ozone, the combination, with an electric generator, of an ozone-generator forming one only of the electric terminals and havinga discharge-opening for the ozone, the other without shock or any disagreeterminal being adapted for application to the .body, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In an electric apparatus, the combination, with the electric generator, of an ozone-' generator forming one only of the terminals and comprising a bulb of insulating material having a discharge-opening and an electrode in the bulb, to which the conducting-wire leads, provided with projections of conducting. material, the other terminal being constructed for application to the body, substantially as described.

ing a contracted discharge-opening and lined -on its innersnrface with conducting material and an electrode in the bulb, to which the conducting-wire leads, provided with pointed metal projections, the other terminal .being constructed for application to the body, substantially as described.
5. In an electric apparatus, the co'mbination, with the electric generator, of an ozonegenerator forming one of the terminals and comprising a bulb of insulating material having a contracted discharge-opening and lined on its inner surface with conducting material and an electrode in the bulb, to which the conducting-wire leads, comprising a metal cup provided on one of its surfaces with pointed metal projections, the other terminal being constructed for application to the body, substantially as described.
6. In an electric apparatus, the combination, with the electric generator, of an ozonegenerator forming one of the terminals and comprising a bulb of insulating material having a contracted discharge-opening and lined on its inner surface with conducting material and an electrode in the bulb, to which the conducting-wire leads, comprising a metal cup provided on its inner and-outer surfaces with pointed metal projections, the other terminal being constructed for application to the body, substantially as described.
