O. NERI.
SURFACE GAGE.
No. 480,959. Patented Aug. 16, 1892.
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CONTENTO NERI, OF FRIENDSHIP, MAINE.
SURFACE-GAG E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 480,959, dated August 16, 1892.
Application filed March 9, 1892 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CONTENTO NERI, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Friendship, in the county of Knox and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Surface-Gages, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in pointing devices for use on surfaces-such as marble or granite or like materialand in statuary and carving work, being designed to take the place of calipers in securing proper measurement.
The invention consists in the details of construction by which I am enabled to secure the universal movement of the pointing-needle.
In the drawing the figure represents a perspective view of the device.
The standard is shown in the figure at A, and this standard supports at its upper end a clamp a, which has a screw-threaded end passing through the standard with a thumb-nut b upon its threaded end, suitable Washers being also provided on each side of the standard. The end of the clamp is provided with a shoulder c, which forms a bearing upon one side of the standard. The clamp has its end split, and the two portions are connected by a screw having a thumb-nut, as at b, a round opening being formed through the center of the clamp for the passage of the rod e, which may be adjusted up and down in the clamp by means of the adjustment of the screw holding the split parts of the clamp together. The clamp itself may be adjusted to any angle by means of the thumb-nut holding it to the standard. The outer end of the rod 6 carries a socket fiwhich supports a ball g, from which projects a stem h, and this stem carries the holder of the pointer or needle. A setscrew 1', extending into the socket from the rear wall thereof, engages the ball to hold the stem thereof at any desired angle. The holder is secured to the stem and is provided with projecting cars 70, having openings extending through the same in line with each other, and

through these openings the pointer or needle extends. A leaf spring m, secured to the holder, has its upturned end bearing against the pointer, and thus puts tension upon it in its movement back and forth. This movement may be limited by a collar Z, held to the needle by means of a set-screw n. The needle is angular in cross-section and the openings in the ears of the holder correspond thereto, so that the needle has no turning movement and is held in one position in relation to its holder.
It will be observed that the construction is an exceedingly simple one and that I am enabled to secure every possible adjustment, thus aiding greatly the operator and adding very materially to the efficiency of the device.
I claim as my invention- 1. In combination with a suitable standard, a socket, a stem having a ball connection therewith, a holder carried by the stem, and
a needle or pointer carried by the holder,
substantially as described.
2. In combination, a standard, a socket, a stem having a ball connection therewith, a holder carried by said stem, and a needle adj ustably supported by said holder, substantially as described.
3. In combination with a standard, a holder, universally-adjustable connections between said standard and the holder, and a needle carried by said holder adjustable therein, substantially as described.
4:- In combination with a standard, a holder, a needle adj ustably held therein, a stem carrying said holder, a clamp carried by the standard, and a ball-and-socket connection between said clamp and stem adj ustably supported by the clamp, substantially as described.
In testimonywhereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
OONTENTO NERI. Witnesses:
LORENZO O. MORTON, NELSON THOMPSON.
