CATAMENIAL APPLIANCE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 480,876, dated August 16, 1892.

To all wham it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM HENRY MAs SER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Oat-amenial Appliances, of which the following is aspecification.

The object of my invention is to secure greater comfort and cleanliness for those using such appliances.

My invention comprises the combination of an approximately semicircular frame formed of a single wire, means for suspending such frame in proper position, two side arms pivoted to such frame near the middle thereof, a clamp or catch for securing the free ends of the arms to the frame, and a suitable absorbent pad clamped between the arms and frame, as hereinafter more fully set forth.

The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention. Figure 1 represents my improved appliance with all its parts adjusted ready to be applied for use. Fig. 2 shows the appliance without the absorbent pad, the arms being released ready to receive such pad.

The semicircular pad-sustaining frame A is formed of a wire bent outwardly at its ends and is provided at each end with an outwardly-projecting button a to engage with suitable slots 0 in the slotted suspending clasps I), attached to the beltB by elastic strips 0. On the outer under side of the frame, a short distance to the rear of the middle thereof, issecured the downwardly-projecting laterally-perforated hinge-lug D. The two arms E E are formed of one piece of wire bent, at the middle to form a loop, the two members of which form the arms and the bend of which loop is passed through the lateral perforation in the hinge-lug.

The absorbent pad G is made separate from' the rest of the appliance and is preferably made of a middle layereof absorbent cotton, having on one side an inabsorbent covering applied to the parts a covering of thin netting g to prevent the cotton from adhering to the parts. These pads can be made very cheaply and are light and not bulky, so that a number of them can be carried to replace those which become soiled. The cheapness and light character of the pads admit of their being discarded when soiled without inconvenience to the wearer. The change can eascan be dropped into the basin of the closet,

where the change will probably be made, and then the clean pad is placed in position against the parts and the arms are brought into position and clasped again by the clamp d, which is secured to the frame A and is arranged to secure the ends of arms E E when the pad is in position.

The Wire frame, being very slim, causes no inconvenience to the wearer and will not chafe the skin, and it can be bent to fit the person, so that the pad will be held in place with a gentle pressure. The appliance can be removed and replaced almost instantly by slipping the buttons at 0, out of and into their attachment with the clasps.

It will be understood that the pad may be made of a wad of absorbent cotton, prepared lint, or other suitable material.

I do not wish to be limited to the particular form of pad shown.

Now, having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a catainenial appliance, the combination of the approximately semicircular frame, the two arms hinged thereto, and the clamp for securing the free ends of the arms to the frame.

2. In a catamenial appliance, the combination of the approximately semicircular wire frame having on its outer under side the down wardly-projecting laterally-perforated hingelug, the two arms formed of one piece of wire bent at the middle to form a loop, the two members of which form the arms, and the clamp for securing the free ends of such arms to the frame.

3. In a catamenial appliance, the combination of the slotted suspending clasps and the approximately semicircular pad sustaining frame formed of awire bent outwardly at its ends and provided with the projecting buttons.
