HOSE-CLAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 480,513, dated August 9, 1892.
Application filed January 4, 1892.
To all whom t may concern.:
Be it known that I, LEwIs H. REDEIELD, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hose Clamps, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of this invention is to provide a hose-clamp which shall be composed of a single piece easily stamped out of sheet metal without waste of material and have its clamping devices more convenient of access on the hose and more efficient in its operation; and to that end the invention consists, essentially, of a multiplex hose-clamp formed in one piece with a plurality of clamping-cars at different points of its periphery, as hereinafter more fully described, and set forth in the claims.
In the annexed drawings, Figures l and 2 are respectively edge and side views of a hose-clamp embodying my invention. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the blank from which said hose-clamp is formed. Figs. 4 and 5 are respectively edge and side views of modified form of the hose-clamp, and Fig. 6 is a plan view of the blank from which the latter h0seclamp is formed.

B represents the band, which is made to embrace the hose and is provided with perforated ears e e for the reception of the bolts f f, by which to firmly clamp the band on the hose.
My improved hose-clamp is provided with a plurality of said perforated ears at different points in the circumference thereof, as shown. This is a very important feature, especially when the hose-clamp is on a large heavy hose, inasmuch as it always has at least one of the clamping devices accessible for tightening the same without necessitating the lifting or turning of the hose. Said plurality of clamping devices also allow the band to be more rmly clamped on the hose, and by constructing the said multiplex hose-clamp as hereinafter described I dispense with the usual tongues or ingers heretofore employed for bridging the space between the ends of the Serial No. 416,921. (No model.)
band and preventing the hose from buckling up in said space.
I form myimproved hose-clamp in one piece of the form of a blank stamped out of suitable sheet metal by means of suitable dies. Said blank is of the form of two elongated sections a a, united side by side and each extending with one end beyond that of the other, as shown in Figs. 3 and 6 of the drawings, and in order to allow the two sections to bend more readily independent of each other I slit the blank longitudinally at the junction of the two sections part way from the ends thereof, as shown at c c. A number of such blanks can be stamped out of a prolonged band of metal without waste of material, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 3 of the drawings. If desired, the blank may be slotted longitudinally, as shown at 7l t' in Fig. 6 of the drawings. The two ends of each section a is perforated, as shown at d d, and in forming the hose-clamp the main portion of the blank is bent into circular form, and the perforated end portions are bent radially outward to form the coupling-ears e e.
For clamping the band on the hose I prefer to employ right-and-left screws f, or screws having their threads pitched. in opposite direction from the center of their lengths to opposite ends, and in connection with each of these screws I use two nuts a n, applied to opposite sides of the earsee and having their threads pitched to correspond to those of the screw. One end of the screw I prefer to provide with a transverse slot s for the application of a screw-driver, and the opposite end I form square or hexagonal for the application of a wrench, and thus adapt the screw to be turned by either of the aforesaid tools. The turning of the screw causes both nuts to move simultaneously in opposite directions from each other, and thus the adjustment is accomplished very rapidly and eectually.
Inasmuch as the screw f stands constantly parallel to a tangent in relation to the band, while the ears e e move from a position parallel to each other to an angular position, and vice versa, during the operations of slackening and tightening the band, the screw is lia` ble to become bound in the perforations d d,

and in order to guard against this result I elongate the said perforations in a direction radial to the band, said elongation being shown in Figs. 3 and 6 of the drawings.
It will be observed that a solid portion of the band extends along the side of each of the spaces between the ears e e and serves to prevent the hose from being buckled up between the ears. Hence the usual tongues or ngers heretofore extended from the ends of the band and lapped onto the inner side of the opposite end portions of the band are dispensed with.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A multiplex hose-clamp consisting of a metal band formed in one piece with a plurality of clamping-ears at diierent points of its periphery, as set forth.
2. A hoseclaxnp band formed in one piece of sheet metal and of elongated sections united side by side and each extending with one end beyond that of the other and provided with boltfholes in the two extremities of each section and slitted longitudinally at the junction of the sections part way from the ends thereof, substantially as described and shown.
