Description

(No Model) 4 H. E. HARRIS WHIFPLETREE HOOK.
No. 480,465. Patented Aug. 9, 1892.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY E. HARRIS, OF TRIUMPH, MINNESOTA.
WHlFFLETREE-HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 480,465, dated August 9, 1892.
Application filerl March 30,1892. Serial No. 427,063. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, HENRY E. HARRIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Triumph, in the county of Martin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Whifl'letree-Hooks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying draw ings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in whiffletree-hooks; and it has for its object to provide an improved form of whiffietree-hook which will be cheap of construction, automatic in its operation, of few parts, and will be both serviceable and durable.
To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain the same consists in the peculiar construction and in the novel arrangement and adaptation of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
The invention is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which drawings Figure 1 is a perspective View of one end of a whiflietree with my improved hook attached. Fig. 2 is a like View in which the hook is shown as open.
Reference now being had to the details of the invention by letter, A designates the whiffletree, upon the end of which is sleeved the casting B, having upon its rear inner edge and integral therewith an inwardly-extended arm or projection 0, through which screws or bolts are passed in securing the casting to the whiffletree. The hook D is of the usual form and is cast integral with the main portion of the casting. The cast-ing B is provided at its extreme outer end with a semi-annular flange portion E, which extends for a short distance beyond the end of the whiffletree and forms a housing for the gravity-latch F. The gravity-latch F consists of a casting having a body portion f, extending from one edge of which is the arm or latch f the outer end of which is beveled to correspond with the beveled end of the hook D, as shown at f The latch F is loosely sleeved upon a bolt or pivot G, which is extended into the end of the whiftletree, the pivotal point of the latch being near its forward edge and adjacent to the point at which the arm or latch proper f 2 unites with the body portion of the casting. It will be seen that by this construction the latch will be normally held in a closed position by gravity, as it is shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. When it is proposed to open the hook, it may be'readily done by simply raising the body portion of the gravity-latch, as will be understood. The fiangeE serves to effectually protect the latch from accidental injury, and at at the same time it prevents the possibility of the latch becominginoperative by reason of the catching of foreign substances, which frequently catch upon the ends of the whiflletree when in use.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein-described improvement in whiffietree-hooks, the same comprising a casting adapted to be fitted over the end of the whiffietree and having upon its rear edge an in- Wardly-extended arm Oand upon its opposite side a hook, the semi-annular flange E, extending beyond the end of the whiftletree, and the gravity-latch pivoted to the end of the whiffletree within the flange E and adapted to normally close the space between the end of the hook and the whiftletree, substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY E. HARRIS.
