UNrrEE 3TATES PATENT OFFICE.
CALVIN NATHANIEL LEATHERWOOD, OF I-IUTTO, TEXAS.
LISTING-PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 479,987, dated August 2, 1892.
Application filed April 7, 1892. Serial No. 428.184. (No model .To @ZZ whom zit may concern.-
Be it known that I, CALVIN N ATHANIEL LEATHERWOOD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hutto, in the county of Williamson and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Listing-Plow, of which the following is a speciicatiom My invention relates to improvements in listing-plows, the objects in view being to pro vide a plow of this class which shall be of cheap and simple construction and readily adjustable to form wide or narrow beds and to be used in bedding' of cotton or corn.A
With these objects in view the invention consists in certain features of construction hereinafterspecified, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a perspective of a listing-plow constructed in accordance with myinvention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation. Fig. 3 is a transverse section.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the iigures of the drawings.
It will be obvious from the subjoined description that my invention may be applied to the ordinary sulky-plow frame or constructed and utilized in the manner hereinafter described and shown.
In the present instance l designates a main or central beam, which, if the device be employed in connection with a sulky-plow, will be the main or central beam thereof. A pair of front and rear bolts 2 are passed through the beam at suitable points and also through front and rear pairs of transverse bars 3 and 4, respectively. These bars are located at the upper and lower sides of the beam l and extend some distance laterally from the beam, as shown. The beams of each vertically-opposite pair are provided at opposite sides of the beam l and near their ends with s.ots 5 longitudinally disposed, and in each Vertically-opposite pair of slots a vertical bolt is mounted, which may be adjusted throughout the length of the slot and there secured by their taps or nuts.
At opposite sides of the beam l and between the vertically-opposite pairs of cross-bars 3 nd 4 plow-beams 7 are located, and through perforations forme d therein the pairs of front and rear bolts 6 pass. Each of the beams l is provided at one of its ends with a depending plow-standard 9, and to said standards ordinary turning plows are in this instance secured, and also braces 9% The plow-standard 9 of one beam is located at the rear end of said beam, while the said standard of the opposite beam is at the front end of the latter, so that the said plows are at diametrically-opposite corners of the frame,or, in other words, one plow is slightly in advance of the other. This completes the construction, with the exception of a pair of opposite-diverging hounds l0, which are loosely connected by a bolt 1l to the beam l and at their rear ends by bolts 12 at the front ends of the beams 7. The front ends of the hounds are provided with a series of adjusting-holes 10a, through any one of which the bolt 1l is passed, so that the beams are permitted to spread.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that through the adjustability of the beams 7 by means of the bolts 6 in the slots 5 of the cross-bars 3 and 4 the plows may be arranged at various distances apart, and consequently adapted to operate upon wide or narrow beds of either cotton or corn; furthermore, that the invention is simple, composed of few parts, and is strong and durable.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- In a listing-plow, the combination, with the main beam l, the upper and lower front and rear cross-bars 3 and 4, embracing the upper and lower sides thereof, the bolts 2, passed through the cross-bars and beam l, securing the beams and bars rigidly together, the longitudinal slots formed in the cross-bars and at opposite sides of the beam 1, and the bolts adj ustably mounted in the slots, of the opposite beams 7, provided at diagonally-opposite N ends with depending plow-carryingstandards and having perforations through which the bolts 6 pass, whereby the bars and beams 7 are adjustably connected, the loose connecting-rods between the front ends of the beams 7 and l, the opposite inclined hounds 10, bolted at their rear ends to the front ends of the beams '7 and provided at their front ends with securing-plates having a series of holes, and bolts passed through the same into the beam l, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
A. W. CARPENTER, H. Y. ALLEN.
