To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, GEORGE O. IVOLFE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohippewa Falls, in the county of Chippewa and State of WVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Umbrella- Handles; and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable othro ers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to umbrellas and similar structures that are provided with a stick or handle, ribs or stretchers, and a run- !5 ner by means of which the said ribs orstretchers are opened or closed.

The object of the invention is to lengthen and shorten the handle or stick and fasten it in the located position; also, to secure the runner at the required place on the stick, to fix the ribs orbraces andhold them at the located position against accidental displacement, and to provide simple and efficient contrivances to carry the invention into successful and practi- 2 5 cal operation.

The improvement consists of the novel features which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and which are shown in the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is a side view, parts being broken away, of an umbrella embodying my invention. The stick or handle is extensible, being composed of the telescoping sections 13 and O. The section B is tubular to receive the sec- 5 tion 0, which slides freely therein, and is provided with the slot 1) and the notches b and Z2 at the ends of the slot b. The slot 12 is at the lower end of the slot b and is returned at its inner end. The section 0 is held in a projected or retracted position by the pin to entering the notch Z) or the notch 12 This pin a also serves to limit the movement of the section 0 and prevents the accidental withdrawing of the same from the section B. The notch E and the runner D are mounted on the handle. The runner D in the present case is constructed to move down on the handle to open the umbrella and in the opposite direction to close the same.

The frame is composed of folding ribs, which comprise the members F and G, which are pivoted together near their opposing ends, which ends overlap fora short distance. The braces H are pivoted to the members G and and are connected with the runner D in the usual manner. The folding ribs and the manner of strengthening the same by the braces I-I form the subject-matter of an application filed of an even date herewith and hence are only referred to generally herein.

The runner D is provided at its lower end with two annular ribs 1, between which the locking-ring J is fitted. The runner is slotted in its lower end and is held together and braced at said slotted end by the lockingring J, the latter encircling the runner and adapted to be turned thereon, being limited in its motion by the pin 70, which projects into the space K, formed by cutting away the up per edge of the said locking ring J. The locking-ring J is provided with channel Z to register with the slotm in the runner for the purpose hereinafter more fully set forth. The stick is provided at the proper place with pin M, which, in connection with the locking-ring J, fastens the runner at the desired point on the stick.

The operation of theinvention is as follows: To lengthen the stick or handle, turn the section 0 sufficiently far to withdraw the pin a from the notch b and pull the said section out until the pin a strikes the bottom of the slot 1). Turn the section C until the pin er enters the notch 19 and press it in to cause the pin a to enter the return end of the said notch. The section 0 is now located in the projected position. To open the umbrella, move the runner to the required place on the stick. The locking-ring J is turned on the runner to throw the channel Ztherein out of 100 register with the slot b in the runner, thereby locking the runner, because the ring extends across the path of the pin M. To release the runner, so that it can be moved on the stick, the ring J is turned on the runner to bring the channel Ztherein in coincidence with the slot b, which will permit the runner to pass by the pin M, the latter entering the said channel Z and passing therethrough. It will be observed that the locking-ring J also serves to hold the section 0 in a projected position when the umbrella is open. When the umbrella is opened and held in a normal position, the weight of the same will be carried by the parts B and O. The pin a,being carried by the part 0, will under normal condi tions be retained in the return-notch 12 Hence a twirling of the umbrella will not cause the pin to register with the slot 1) and permit the umbrella to close at an inopportune moment. The pin M being engaged by the locking-ring J, the umbrella will be prevented from closing entirely should the pin a slip from the notch 11 Having thus described my invention, what 1 I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination, in an umbrella, of an extensible stick or handle and the runner and the pin and the locking-ring to secure the parts of the handle in a projected position and fasten the runner on the stick, substantially as described.

2. In an umbrella, the combination, with the handle and the pin M, proj ected from the handle, of the runner having slot m and having the annular ribs I and having the pin 70 between the said ribs and to one side of the said slot m, and the locking-ring held on the runner between the ribs I and having a portion cut away at K to receive the pin 7t and having channel Z on its inner side for the pin M to pass through, substantially as and for the purpose described.
