SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 479,899, dated August 2, 1892.

To all whom it may concern/.-

Be it known that I, HENRY JOHN PAIN, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing in the city and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Pyrotechnic Suits, of which the following is a specification.

In pyrotechnic displays efforts have heretofore been made to represent by fireworks different animals by attaching lights upon frames, to which motion is given in imitation of the movement of an animal.

The present invention is made for the purpose of protecting the performer from injury during the pyrotechnic display and for illuminating such performer, so that the movements are life-like and highly entertaining to an audience and at the same time the person giving the performance runs very little risk of personal injury.

In carrying out this invention the performer is covered with a fire-proof suit, preferably made of asbestus fabric, securely fastened upon a foundation of canvas or similar material, said suit being flexible or pliable, so as not to interfere with the motions of the performer, and upon or connected with the suit worn by the performer are holders for fireworks or lights made use of in the exhibition. Hence when the performer moves the lights or fireworks receive a corresponding motion.

In the drawings, Figure l is an elevation illustrating the suit as worn by the performer. Fig. 2 is asection in larger size, representing one of the lights or fireworks, the holder for the same, and the fabric of the suit; and Fig. 3 illustrates, on a smaller scale, the suit with the addition of a frame to simulate a rooster.

The suit worn by the performer is conveniently composed of pantaloons A, a jacket B, with sleeves and mittens O, and a helmet D, covering the head and with a cape around the neck and shoulders, and preferablya facepiece E to shield the lower part of the face, the eyes being protected by the upper part of the helmet, and this suit is to be made throughout of asbestus fabric or similar fire-proof material, as shown at 2, Fig. 2, and the same is securely fastened to a backing or foundation 3, of can vas or other su fficiently-strong fabric,

and upon this suit, at suitable distances apart and in the desired positions, are sockets F, having base-pieces or disks 4 of a sufficient size to be attached conveniently around the edges, by sewing or otherwise, to the suit, so that the sockets project outwardly and are supported by the fabric of the suit, and these sockets are adapted to receive blue lights or other pyrotechnic devices, and the base of the socket is sufficiently large to hold the socket in the proper position in relation to the suit, and in consequence of the suit and the lights moving with and by the motions of the performer the exhibition has the appearance of animated fireworks, and these animated fireworks can be availed of in giving exhibitions, such as boxing and Wrestling, ball playing, walking matches, 850., and any desired number of persons can engage in such performances, and they are very amusing.

In some instances this fire-p roof pyrotechnic suit is available with additions thereupon such, for instance, as a framework 10, resembling a rooster or an elephant or any animal, such framework being connected with the suit and receiving its motion from the person wear-,

motion from the party wearing the suit, substantially as set forth.
