C. RUSCH. STOVEPIPB FASTENER.'
No. 479,844. Patented'Aug. 2, 1892.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHRISTIAN RUSCH, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO FRIEDRICH C. HAMM, OF SAME PLACE.
STOVEPI PE-FASTEN E R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 479,844, dated August 2, 1892.
Application filed December 4, 1891. Serial No. 413,993. (No model.)
T0 a/ZZ whom, t may concer-72,:
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN RUSCH, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stovepipe-Fasteners, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to provide means for securing a stovepipe in the hole in the chimney into which the pipe enters.
The invention is embodied in devices attached to a thimble adapted to be fixed in the chimney about the stovepipe-hole and cornprises the thimble and parts attached thereto and connected therewith.
In the drawings, Figure l is a front elevation of the complete device as it appears when in place about the hole in the chimney. Fig. 2 is a front end view of the thimble and devices attached thereto for vfastening the pipe in the thimble, the annular guard or cover and the plate over the eccentric being omitted. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the device on line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a section on line 4 e of Fig. 2. 5 is a section, on an enlarged scale, with the annular guard in proper position, taken on a plane indicated by the line 5 5, Fig. 2, looking toward the top.
The thimble A, preferably made of cast-iron and cylindrical in form, is adapted to be inserted and fixed in the chimney about the stovepipe-hole, the outer end of the thimble being arranged flush with the outer surface of the chimney or Wall. A iiexible metal strap B, located just within the outer end of the thimble, extends around the upper half of the thimble and is secured at one extremity to the thimble conveniently by attaching it to apin C, provided therefor in a recess D, formed in the Wall of the thimble. The other extremity of the strap is provided with a loop E,Which passes around and bears against the cylindrical block F, located in a suitable re cess therefor in the wall of the thimble about opposite the'pin C, which block is journaled eccentrically in the inner and outer walls of the recess G, in which itis located. The outer wall of the recess is for the convenience of construction preferably formed of a removable plate II, secured by screws through it, turning into ears I I on the walls of the recess. The cam-biock F is provided with-"a faced keyhole K in the outer end of its journal, which is adapted to receive a key for rotating the eccentric. t
This device is utilized by inserting the stovepipe in the thimble under the strap B While the eccentric Fis in the position shown in Fig. 2, and thereupon, the stovepipe being properly in the thimble, the eccentric F is by the aid of a keyinserted in the keyhole K, rotated a half-revolution, whereby .the strap B is drawn tightly against the stovepipe, and the pipe is thereby locked in position. As the strain of the strap B ou the eccentric F will when the strap is so locked be directly toward the axis of the cam, the eccentric will remain in position Without having to be locked in place by a pawl or any similar device.
An annular guard L, preferably constructed of cast-iron, having an aperture of substantiall y the saule size as the aperture through the thimble, is adapted to be placed against the end of the thimble and secured thereto, thus covering all of the thimble and forming a neat and, if desired, an ornamental finish about the stovepipe. An aperture M is provided, which when the guard is in place and properly secured to the thimble registers with the keyhole K in the end of the journal of the cam F and is adapted for inserting the key therethrough for rotating the cam.
The guard L is provided with a lug N, adapted to enter a socket C therefor in the Wall of of the thimble near the recess G. This socket is formed by providing the outer edge of the thimble atthis point with an angular outward bend and by extending t-he plate H beyond the edge of the thimble to cover the socket. The guard L is also provided with a hook or latch P, projecting from its under surface, which latch is adapted to engage the inclined catch R, rigid on the thimble A, in the recess D. The guard L is secured in place on the end of the thimble before the stovepipe is inserted by entering the lug N in the socket O and passing the latch P into the recess D above the catch R and allowing the guard to tilt down at this left side sufficiently to engage the inner inclined edge of the catch R, whereby the guard is locked in position tightly but detachably to the thimble.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, with a pipe-thimble, of a exible metallic strap attached at one end to one side of the thimble and extending around on the inside of the thimble about onehalf of its circumference and a cylindrical cam journaled eccentrcally on the thilnble in a recess therefor at one side of the pipe-aperture through the thimble, which eccentric is provided with an axial keyhole adapted to receive a key for rotating it, substantially as described.
2. The combination, witha stovepipe-thimble-"having a recess in its Wall near its outer end at one side of its pipe-aperture, of a flexible metallic strap secured at one end to the thimble at one side and extending half around the thimble on the inside, terminating at its other end in a loop, and a cylindrical cam about which the loop at the end of the strap passes and against which it bears, which cam is journaled in the walls of the recess, its axis being parallel with the axis of the thimble, substantially as described. t
8. The combination of a stovepipe-thimble having its circumference at diametrically-opposite points bent out angularly to form recesses, a cam within one of the recesses, a removable plate forming the outer Wall of the cam-recess, a part ofthe plate projecting out laterally at a point above an indented portion of the thimble, whereby a socket is formed, an inclined catch or lug Within the opposite recess, a flexible strap having one end connected to a pin Within said recess and its opposite end looped upon the cam in the opposite recess, and an annular guard adapted to be placed against the end of the thimble, so as to completely cover the same, provided with an aperture registering with the thimble-aperture and also with depending hooks, one of which is adapted to engage the inclined lug and the other the socket of the thimble, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
