J. w'. RUHL.
GATE.
, Patented July 26, 1892:
THE Mourns UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.-
JOHN w. RUHL, OF MIFFLINBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, 'ASSIGNOR or ONE-HALF TO DAVID L. RUHL, OF SAME PLACE.
GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent Na 479,665, dated July 26, 1892.
Application filed March 16, 1892. Serial No. 425,139. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN IV. RUHL, a citi-' zen of the United States, residing at Mifllin- .burg, in the county of Union and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Gate, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in gates.
The object of the present invention is to simplify and improve the construction of tilting gates and to provde one which may be read-. ily opened or closed from either side of it at a distance therefrom to avoid dismounting or leaving a vehicle.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a gate. Fig.2 is a vertical sectional view.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures of the drawings.
1 designates a tilting gate, which is pivotally mounted between posts 2, and which is provided with a rearwardly-projecting triangular extension 3, having a weight 4,whereby the gate is counterbalanced and may be readily tilted and opened by pulling-ropes 5. The front end of the gate is provided with a springactuated latch 6, arranged to engage a horizontally-disposed keeper '7 or a latch-post 8. The upper end of the latch is connected by a cord or rope 9 with a vertically-disposed latchlever 10, which is fulcrurned on the gate and is connected below its pivotal point byalatchrope 11 with the pulling-rope 5. The pulling- 4o ropes extend vertically from the gate and over a pulley 13 at the top of the latch-post 8 and thence over pulleys 14: of uprights 15, arranged on opposite sides of the gate. By pulling one of the ropes 5 the latch is released from on gagement with the keeper and the gate is raised sufficiently to cause the weight 4 to act and carry the gate to a vertical position. When the gate is being closed, the weight serves to retard it and to counterbalance it to prevent injury to it.
It will be seen that the gate is simple and comparatively inexpensive in construction and is capable of being readily operated.
That I claim is- The combination of the posts, a gate pivotally mounted between the posts and provided with a weighted inverted triangular extension projecting rearwardly from it, rigid with it, and forming a part of it, a latch arranged at the front of the gate, a Vertically-disposed lever fulcrurned on the gate and having its upper end connected with the latch, and operating-ropes connected with the lower end of the lever and adapted to release the latch and lift the gate, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as myown I have hereto aflixed my signature in v the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN W. RUHL.
Witnesses: F. M. GETGEN,
S. B. HOFFMAN.
