HAY-CARRIER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 479,423, dated July 26, 1892.
Application filed April 22, 1892. Serial No, 430,261- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JosEPH LEWIS HOFF- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Longtown, in the county of Perry and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hay-Carriers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a device for use in connection with hay-carriers, its object being to utilize both the forward and return movement of the draft animal for operating the hay-carrier.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device for the purpose described, which will effect economy in time, and which will also possess advantages in point of inexpensiveness and durability in construction and general efticiency.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view illustrating the application of my invention. Fig. 2 is afront elevation of the device. Fig. 3 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 4 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view taken on the line a: 00, Fig. 2.
Corresponding parts in the figures are denoted by the same letters of reference.
Referring to the drawings, A designates an upright post designed to be set up at a point preferably in line with the travel of the haycarrier. The post Ais ofiset at its upper end at each side, forming a central upward projeotion a, which preferably has its rear upper edge rounded, as shown. A metallic plate B is secured to the back of the post A, and from thence bent over the upper end of the projection a and in advance thereof. The plate is at its forward point bent to form an eye I), and from the latter is bent rearwardly and again over the projection a. Between the forward and rearward portions of the plate B is mounted a pulley O, the latter being revoluble on a vertical journal 0, passing through the members of said plate. The carrier-rope is designed to be passed around the pulley O, and to prevent its accidental disengagement therefrom the free end of the plate is bent to form a downturned member I).
D D designate two forwardly and upwardly curved metallic brackets, which are secured at their lower ends to the sides of the post and below the projection a. These brackets are provided each at its free end with an eye d, said eyes being in alignment with the eye Z). lVithin the eyes I) and d is mounted a horizontal shaft E, and upon this shaft are j ournaled two pulleys or spools F F. The pulleys or spools occupy, respectively, the spaces between the eye I) and the brackets D.
The operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which it appertains. In the ordinary operation of a hay-carrier the carrier proper is drawn by a rope from one point the desired distance. The draft-animal is then returned and the operation repeated. Thus for every movement of the carrier in a forward direction the draft-animal is compelled to traverse twice the distance of the carrier. The object of my invention is to obviate this difficulty, and it effects its office in the following manner: The post, as before stated, is located, preferably, in line with the travel of the carrier. The draft-animal is driven forward half the distance to be covered by the carrier, when the draft-rope is looped behind the pulley O and the movement of the animal reversed. It will be readily obvious that by the latter movement the carrier is still drawn in a forward direction, and when the animal has arrived at the starting-point the carrier will have been transported the desired distance. Thus by the use of my invention the draft-animal is compelled to cover but the same distance as the carrier, and at the com pletion of hauling the latter the animal is also at the starting-point ready for hauling a new load.
It will be understood that when the load has been discharged from the carrier the latter is returned to its starting-point by one of the operators, as is customary. Before this is done, however, the draft-rope is detached from the device.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a device of the character described, the combination, with an upright post carrying a pulley journaled on a vertical bearing upon the top of said post, of a horizontal shaft located at the top of said post and in front of said pulley and two pulleys or spools j ournaled upon said horizontal shaft and located in front of the central pulley and respectively at each side of the same, said pulleys being independent of each other, and the arrangement being such that the horizontal pulley is located centrally between the two pulleys or spools projecting at the front of the post, sub
stantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination, with an upright post provided at its upper end with an upward projection, of a U-shaped plate mounted upon the latter, a pulley journaled in said plate and upon a vertical bearing, brackets pro- 3' ectin g forwardly and upwardlyfrom the sides of the post,a horizontal shaft secured in said brackets, and two corresponding pulleys or spools journaled on said shaft, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a device of the character'described, the combination, with an upright post provided at its upper end with an upward projection, of a plate secured to the latter, bent forwardly over the same and thence rearwardly,the free end of said plate being turned downwardly, a pulley journaled in the frame formed by said plate, a horizontal shaft 10- catcd in front of the post, and two corresponding pulleys or spools journaled on said shaft, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. A device of the character described, consisting of a vertical post having an upwardlyprojecting central extension at its upper end, a plate secured at the back of said extension, thence bent forwardly over the same and formed in from t of the post with an eye, thence bentrearwardly and its free end finally downwardly, a pulley journ aled in the frame formed by said plate, forwardly and upwardly projecting brackets secured to the sides of the post and provided at theirfree ends with eyes in horizontal alignment with the eye of the plate, a shaft mounted in said eyes, and two corresponding pulleysor spools journaled on the shaft between the supports therefor, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
