Description
J-. FAUBION, Sr. GAR COUPLING.
(No Model.)
N0. 479,262. Patented Jul 19, 1892.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN FAUBION, SR, OF LEANDER, TEXAS.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO. 479,262, dated July- 19, 1892.
Application filed September 5, 1891- Serial No. 404.911. (No model.)
To all whom, it Wtay concern:
Be itknown that I, JOHN FAUBION, Sn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Leander, in the county of Williamson and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Car- Ooupling, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to devices for automatically coupling railroad-cars; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully pointed out, and specifically set forth in the claim. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal view through the center. Fig. 2 is a view in perspective of draw-head. Fig. 3 is a side and top view of opposite draw-head and trip. Fig. 4: is a side and top View of the trip.
Similar-letters refer to similar parts throughout the drawings.
A is the draw-head, as shown in Fig. 1.
f is a steel plate forming a flange made fast to the sides of the draw-head, or the whole may be made of malleable cast-iron.
B is a trip or slotted slide, made fast to the inner sidesof the flanges f by means of a bolt passing through its eye and forming a loose hinge. Upon the top of the opposite drawhead I have provided an incline, in which the draw-pin c is seated and enters through the draw-head, engaging the link 01. In its operation as an automatic coupler as the cars are moved together the loose end of the trip B enters upon the lower end of the incline, and as the cars come closer together the slot in the end of the trip takes hold underneath the head of the draw-pin and raises it up at a slight angle, when the draw-pin will disengage itself automatically by the head dropping through the circular opening, as appears in Fig. 4 at 00, when it will enter the hole in the draw-head, passing through the connectinglink, and the cars are coupled. In uncoupling the cars it is necessary to raise the loose end of the trip 13 and lift the draw-pine in the usual way.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a car-coupler, the combination, with a draw-head A, the pin 0, link d, flanges f, and trip B for raising and holding in position the draw-pin 0 until it shall automatically fall into the hole provided in the opposite drawhead, engaging the link, thereby completing the coupling, substantially as and for the purpose described.
JOHN FAUBION, SR.
