FRUIT-JAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 478,659, dated July 12, 1892.
Application filed November 14, 1891. Serial No. 11,987. (N0 model.)
To all whmn it may concern:
Be-it kn own that I, OAssIUs D. THOMAS, of the city of Moberly, Randolph county, and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fruit-Jars, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
' My invention relates to improvements in fruit-jars; and it consists in the novel arrange ment and combination of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and designated in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my complete invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a modification of my invention. Fig. 3 is avertical longitudinal section thereof. Fig. 4 is a top plan View of the same, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the fastening device which I employ in carrying out my invention.
The object of my invention is to provide a I novel and simplified construction in fruit-jars whereby the lid or cover for the same may be quickly and tightly sealed to said jar.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a fruit-jar, the body of which is of the ordinary construction and which is adapted to receive the fruit or other substance which may be placed therein. The said jar may be constructed of glass, earthenware, or any other suitable material, and such that it may be especially designed for the purpose. The upper surface of the neck 2 of the said jar is provided with an annular peripheral flange 3, which flange, as will be hereinafter described, forms a portion of a locking device whereby the lid or cover may be sealed, and, further, provide a seat for said cover. The upper surface of said flange is provided with an annular depression 4, within which depression is placed a ring of impermeable material 5, which forms a water-tight connection between said flange and lid.
6 represents the lid or cover, which is suitably constructed, as shown in the drawings, the bottom of which is cut away, as shown at 7, leaving an annular flange 8, which flange rests upon the washer 5 when the lid or cover is sealed to said jar. The lower surfaces of the annular flange 3 are formed with inclines, as shown at 9. Said inclines are two in number and located opposite one another, extending in the direction of the flange, the diverging portions of which inclines meet the wlder portions thereof, and which may be commonly termed as a Whole a half-screw. At the point of intersection of the inclines are thus formed shoulders 9, said shoulders being inclined or beveled, as shown.
10 represents the securing device, which is made, preferably, of metal, such as wire, one portion of which bears against the lid or cover 6 and the ends brought in contact with the inclined portions formed on the under surface of the annular flange 3.
The securing device 10 is suitably formed or bent at or near its center in order to form a bearing portion 11, which portion rests or bears upon the top of the lid or cover 6. Leading from said bent portion or arch the said device is suitably formed and curved to allow its free end to come beneath the annular flange 3. The ends 12 of said securing device are bent at an angle to the wire or laterally therefrom and project opposite to one another.
By forming the securing device as before described two straight arms 13 are formed, which arms are brought in contact with the inclined portion formed on said annular flange 3.
In operation, assuming that the cover is in secured position, to remove the same the securing device is turned in a contrary direction to that in which said device is secured, the same turning centrally upon the cover. When the arms 13 come in contact with the inclined or beveled shoulders 9, the arms are automatically freed from engagement with the inclines, and can thus be removed from the jar without the necessity of the operator first springing the retaining members of the device 10 over said inclines.
In Fig. 2 I have shown a modification of my invention, in which construction the under surface or inclined portions of the annular flange 3 are provided with teeth or corrugations 14:. In this figure it will also be seen that the arms 13 are provided each with a lug 15, which lug engages the teeth 14., and when the device is securely applied to the jar the same will not slip back and release the cover 6.
