To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BYRON VAN WIE, of Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Centrifugal Extractors; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification, in which-- Figure 1 is a sideelevation, partly broken, of my improved drive for centrifugal extractors and similar revolving machinery. Fig. 2 is a central vertical sectional view of the same. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are details.
This invention is an improvement in centrifugal extractors, or machines for separating liquids from solids or liquids of different gravities for drying cloths, &c., by separating the Water therefrom, and for many purposes in the arts where it is desired to speedily separate bodies of diiferent specific gravity by revolving them rapidly in a suitable holder, so that the lighter or less tenacious substance will be separated from the heavier and denser substance by centrifugal action and thrown out of the vessel.
The present invention is designed to permit the extractor or separating-vessel to gyrate freely while revolving, so that the substances being treated can shift freely in the vessel without any damage to or strain upon the driving mechanism, which, however, will always tend to cause the vessel to assume and keep a horizontal position while revolving.
The invention consists in the novel construction of the supporting devices for the revoluble extractor and in the novel construction and'connection of the devices for imparting rotary motion thereto, all of which will be clearly understood from the following description and concisely summarized in the claims.
Referring to the drawings by letters, A designates the base of the machine, securely fastened to a suitable foundation, and B a short verticalshaft fixed in a socket in base A. O is a metallic dish pinned on top of shaft B, its upper face being concaved, as shown,
and having a slight flange c on its edge. These parts are stationary. D is a carrierblock, having an enlarged head D, convexed on its bottom to fit in the concave dish 0, and from it rises a vertical tapered stub-shaft d, which may be integral with the head, but is preferably a separate piece set in a socket therein, so as to be replaceable when worn, and washers (1 may be put in the socket beneath the end of shaft (1 to vertically adjust the latter.
The cylindrical-extractor vessel E is of ordinary form, except that its bottom has a central perforated stud e, which fits on studshaft d, and thus supports and centers the extractor thereon. As shown, the sides of the extractor are perforated, and it has an inwardly-projecting flange e at top to prevent the contents running over the sides thereof. The extractor may be inclosed by a stationary casing 6 as usual.
E E are perforated ears depending from the bottom of the extractor at points diametrically opposite each other and pivotally connected by pins ff to the opposite sides of a ring or annulus F of greater diameter than dish 0.
Ring F is again pivotally connected by pins F F to upstanding earsgg on a similar lower ring G, pins F F being on a line at right angles to pins ff. From ring G depends ears G G at points intermediate ears g g, which are pivotally connected by pins hit to a ring H, lying below ring G, and this ringHis pivotally connectedat points intermediate pins h h to pinst' t, projecting from opposite sides of the hub of a pulley I, loosely journaled on shaft B between base A and dish 0. The rim of this pulley depends toward the base, so as to give ample room for belting it to a proper drive. By this construction it will be seen that the extractor is driven by universaljoint or gimbal-ring connections from a pulley on a fixed shaft, so that the oscillation or tilting of the extractor does not affect the pulley nor cause it to bind on the shaft, as the oscillation will be compensated for between the ring F and extractor or between rings F and G. If the extractor oscillates or tilts to one side, block D shifts its position easily in IOC dish 0 and the whirl of the extractor is uninterrupted thereby, and the opposed concavoconvex faces of the dish and block cause the block to shift back to the center of dish and bring the stub-shaft to a vertical position, and hence if the contents of the extractor shift during its revolution by any cause the support and drive instantly begin to bring it back to proper horizontal smooth-running position.
The extractor can be tilted to one side to facilitate filling thereof without injury to its drive, or by simply removing pins ff it can be lifted off the support and another extractor can be placed thereon, if desired.
It will be observed that the entire weight of the extractor and its contents is transferred direct to the fixed base and no weight is carried by the pulley or drive."
The flange c limits the lateral movement oroscillation of the extractor and also serves to confine the lubricant in dish 0.
The number of gimbal-rings or construction of universal connection might be slightly varied without departing from my invention, which consists in making the connection be tween the drive and extractor so that oscillation or gyration of the latter will not affect the former, and in so constructing the supports of the extractor they will tend to restore it to an equilibrium when it is revolved.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a centrifugal extractor, the combination of the extractor and a support therefor with gimbal-rings connected to the extractor and means for revolving the rings, and there; by driving the extractor, substantially as described.
2. In a centrifugal extractor, the combination of the extractor, a support therefor, a drive mechanism, and universal-joint connec tions between the same for revolving the latter and extractor independently of the support, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the concave-s11 rfaced support with the convex-faced block resting thereon and the stub-shaft fixed to said block and engaginga socket in the bottom of the extractor, substantially as specified.
4. The combination of the concave support, the convex-faced block resting thereon, and a stub-shaft on said block with the extractor mounted on said stub-shaft and mechanism for revolving said extractor, substantially as described.
5. The combination of the concave support, the convex-faced block resting thereon, and astub-shaft fixed to said block, and the extractor mounted on said stub-shaft with the gimbals connected to said extractor and means for drivingthesame,substantially as specified.
6. The combination of the revoluble extractor loosely mounted on a fixed shaft, but independent thereof, and the pulley loosely journaled on shaft below the extractor with the universal connections between said pulley and extractor for driving the latter and retaining it on the shaft, substantially as described.
7. Thc combination of the revoluble extractor loosely supported on the top of a fixed shaft, the pulley loosely journaled on said shaft below the extractor, and the gimbals pivotally connecting said pulley with the extractor, constructed and arranged. substantially as and for the purpose described.
8. The combination of the dish fixed to the upper end of a vertical shaft, the convexsaid extractor, substantially as specified.
10. The combination of the concave dish mounted on a fixed support, the convex-faced block resting therein, the stub-shaft fitting in a socket in said block, and the extractor fit ted on said stub-shaft with the series of gimbal-rings below the extractor, the uppermost being pivotally connected to the extractor and the lowermost to the revolving hub, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
