WASHING-MACHINE.

SPECIFICATION-forming part of Letters Patent No. 478,440, dated July '5, 1892.

Application filed June 9,1891. Serial No. 395,724. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, STEPHENLA POINT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Derrick City, McKean county, Pennsylvania, have inventeda certain new and useful Improvement in Washing-Machines, of which the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, which form a part of the invention, is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The object of my invention is to provide a simple and effective machine for washing clothes which will be economical to construct.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure I is a perspective view of my improved machine. Fig. II is a transverse sectional view. Fig. III is a similar view having the scrubbing-board in raised position. Fig. IV is a perspective view of the scrubbing-board.

A is the tub of the washing-machine, supported upon suitable legs B B and closed by the hinged covers 0 G. D are suitable wheels or rollers mounted upon an axle E, which is journaled in the hind legs B near their lower ends. These rollers are supported near enough to the lower ends otlthe legs 13 to come in contact with the floor when the front legs B are raised from the floor, so that the machine can be moved about with ease.'

Journaled in the upward extensions F of the hind legs B is a rock-shaft G, to the center of which is secured an operating-lever H. The dasher I, which consists of a perforated board, is pivotally supported inside of the tub A upon a rod J and is connected to the operating-lever H through a suitable pitman K, which is pivotally attached to said dasher and operating-lever.

The hind legs B are inclined with relation to the tub A, so that the extensions F lean forward and afford greater leverage upon the operating-lever H.

The rubbing-surface, in combination with which the dasher I operates, consists of a perforated corrugated metal head L,- rigidly secured in the rear end of the tub, and a removable or false bottom M, which serves the double purpose of a rubbing-surface for the machine, and a hand rubbing-board. This combined false bottom and hand rubbingboard M consists of several transverse wooden ribs m and a perforated corrugated curved metal sheet m, secured to said ribs to form the rubbing-surface. The ribsm are cut out at 'm to form a concave surface concentric with the line of travel of the dasher I. m are notches formed on the under sides of the ribs m, adapted to engage the front Wall of the tub A when the board is to be used as a hand rubbing-board. m is a hand-hold attached to the forward end of the board M, by which it can be raised and lowered. m is a turnbuckle attached to the inside of the front end of the tub and adapted to engage the board M and hold it down in place.

By having a perforated false bottom the dirt which is washed from the clothes is allowed to collect in the bottom of the tub, and by having the false bottom removable more room is afforded for washing large articles. The box is formed deeper at the back end a than at the forward end to allow the body of the water to remain in that portion of the tub in which the clothes are situated.

N is a wringer-support consisting of a box attached to the side of the machine near the front end.

7 n is a perforation through the side of the tub A to allow the water from the box N, which is wrung from the clothes, to run back into the tub.

Having thus described my invention, the following is what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

In 'a washing-machine, the combination of the box or tub formed with the end rubbingboard, the convertible false bottom and hand rubbing-board forming a continuation of said end rubbing-board and provided with a concave upper surfaceandnotched loweredges for the purpose explained,and a perforated concave dasher suspended in the tub and having meansfor actuating it, said convertible false bottom and hand rubbing-board being formed of a series of wooden strips having concave recesses in their upper edges, and a perforated corrugated metal sheet secured to said strips n sitlid concave recesses, substantially as set ort STEPHEN LA POINT.
