'l A i bwenf i 5/ I g/z/errmnm Zizzama KMC/04,5 5y 2W QL/JM v' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE@ HERRMANN LEHMANN, OF BERLIN, GERMANY.
CRAVAT-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 478,342, dated July 5, 1892.
Application filed September 19. 1891. Serial No. 406,227. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I. HERRMANN LEHMANN, ot Berlin, in the Kingdom of Prussia and German Empire, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cravat-Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to theaccompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in cravat-holders.
This invention has for its object to remedy defects by fixing upon the inner or reverse side otl the tie a plate which is cut out inside and outside, and upon which is arranged a movable ring likewise cut out at the sides, so that after the collar-stud has been inserted in the inner slot of the said plate and of the ring the solid part of the latter can be pushed over the outside notch of the plate.
The accompanying drawings illustrate a tie clip or holder constructed according to my invention.
Figure l is a section on line a b of Fig. 2. Figs. 2 and 3 show the device in an open and closed position, respectively. Fig. 4 is a section on line c d of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a section on line efof Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a modification of my improved tie clip or holder.
This tie clip or holder consists, essentially, ot a plate y and of' a ring movably connected thereto. The plate y, which is fixed on the inside of the tie, is perforated centrally at o and notched on the side at n, being further bent np at y in such a manner that a collar-stud may be conveniently inserted in the central opening o. Upon this rim y is arranged the closing-ring. m, which can be easily turned round, and is centrally perforated and laterally notched to correspond with the said plate, being further provided with a handle c for convenience of manipulation.
The tie clip or holder is used in the `follow` ing manner: After the plate y has been fixed to the inside of the tie the ring is moved to its open position, as shown in Fig. 3, so that the holes fn, and cof the plate y and of the ring may be open. The collar-stud Ais now conveniently inserted in the central openings of nc and y, and the handle ,c is turned down or tothe left-hand side according as the device is made, thus closing the lateral opening u of the plate y, and firmly clamping the tie to theshank of the collar-stud. The various parts of the tie holder or clip above described' means of a slide p, this frame being fixed to' the inside of the tie. This slide is furnished cent-rally with a small spring p', so as to be placed at any desired height in the guide or staple of the frame. Vhen in use, the plate y is pushed upward after being opened, when the stud is inserted and the ring closed. The mobility of the plate fy is so arranged as to facilitate theinsertion ofthe stud in the same. After the ring is closed 'the plate y is pushed down again into its proper position.
It will be'noticed that the edge of the baseplate y is raised about the central opening and curved inwardly, and that the lockingpiece is crimped around this edge and a rounded flaring opening is thus formed which will aid in the ready attachment to the button and present a curved smooth bearing-surface. The parts are easily attached by this means without the use ot' pivot-pins, it being only necessary to strike up the bearing-edge ot' the base-plate and crimp the locking-ring about it. The locking-piece thus has a continuous track or bearing-edge throughout its extent, which will hold it in all positions against strain.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
In combination, the plate w for attachment to the necktie, the base-plate y, having a central opening and a notch at one side, a locking-ring havinga central opening and a handle, the said base-plate having an extension with the attaching-plate to, and the spring p for retaining the parts in any relative position desired, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand'in presence of two witnesses.
HERRMANN LEHMANN. Witnesses:
PAUL FISCHER, WILHELM BINDEWALD.
