JOHN eAErJE, OE FORT WAYNE, INDIANA.
COUNTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 478,002, dated June 28, 1892. pplication filed March 3l, 1892. Serial No. 427,266. (No model.)
'To all whom it may conceive.A
Be it known that I, JOHN GAETJE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Wayne, in the county of Allen and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Counter, of which the following is a specification.
rlhis invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in foot-rails for counters; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of the parts thereof, as will be more fully described and claimed hereinafter.
The objectof this invention is to provide an improved foot-railing which may be easily raised or lifted from the fioor in order to enable the floor under such railing to be thoroughly cleaned, the parts being simple and effective in their construction and operation j and readily applied.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a portion of a counter, showing the improved foot-rail applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section on the line x 0c,
Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the foot-railing disconnected from the counter. Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the part of the counter with the rail applied thereto and shown raised.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral l designates a counter havinga series of sleeves 2 mounted therein at predetermined intervals and located at a suitable elevation above the level of the floor. Within said sleeves is adjustably mounted a serios of bars or rods 3, having T-heads 4, with apertures or openings extending therethrough. At one or more vpoints along the counter a spring-catch 5 projects outwardly and has a lug on the free end thereof adapted to engage a notch 6, formed in one of the said bars or rods 3, to thereby hold the same in an adjusted position. One of the T-heads 4 o`f the said bars or rods 3 is formed with aligned notches 7 in oneedgeV thereof, and it will be`understood that the exact location of this notched construction, as shown in the accompanying drawings, is not actually necessary for the best results, as the same may be located elsewhere .with equally good results. The said T-heads 4 are arranged in alignment, and therein is loosely mounted the foot-rail 8, which is adeach other and are adapted to engage the notches 7 in one of the said T-heads 4, as set forth, to hold the said railing in adjusted position. The bars 3 may be moved in and out of the sleeves 2, and the parts are so arranged that when the said bars are extended outward a sufficient distance the spring-catch 5 will engage the adjacently-situated bar and sustain a fixed adjustment of the foot-railing outward from the counter. By disengaging the pins 1l from the notches 7 in one of the- T-heads 4, as set forth, by sliding said footrailing longitudinally the same may be turned or rotated and the legs or feet 10 thereof thrown upward out of the way to thereby leave a clear space under the foot-rail as an entirety for cleaning the iioor.
The advantages of a device of this character are readily apparent, and owing to the simplicity of structure it is readily manufactured and cheaply sold. The double adjustment of the foot-railing both in a lon gitudi-v nal and a rotary manner, as well as of the bars or rods carrying the said foot-railing outward from and into the counter, renders the device exceptionally convenient.
The sleeves 2 might be readily dispensed with and the bars or rodsf3 could readily move in openings in the front of the counter and act equally as well as whenthe sleeves were employed. This would involve no departure from the invention, as will be readily apparent.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new isl. In combination with a counter, a footrailing having a longitudinal and a rotary adjustment and horizontally-disposed supports connected to said railing and movable inward and outward through the counter, substantially as described.
2. In combination with a counter, a footrailing having a longitudinal and a rotary adjustment, sleeves mounted in said counter, and supports adjustably mounted in said IOO from said railing and supports therefor, one of which has notches adapted to be engaged by said pins, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as I5 my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of t\vo Witnesses.
JOHN GAETJE.
XVltnesses:
HENRY ORFF, CHARLES O. LEPPER.
