Description

u L I (No Model.)
W. P. POTTER. VOLTAIO BODY BATTERY.
No. 477,913. Patented June 28, 1892.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILSON F. POTTER, OF ALBANY, NEW YORK.
VOLTAIC BODY-BATTERY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 477,913, dated June 28, 1892. Application filed April 4, 1892. Serial No. 427,678, (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILSON F. POTTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electrical Apparatus;
I and I do declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a voltaic body-battery.
Figure 1 shows a plan view of one of the plates; Fig. 2, a similarview of the second plate; Fig. 3, a plan view of the apparatus when ready for use; Fig. 4, a plan view of the electrical excitant; Fig. 5, avertical sectional View of Fig. 4; and Fig. 6, a vertical sectional view of Fig. 3, taken on lineX X of that figure.
The numeral- 1 shows a copper or other metal plate having ears, as shown, and 2 a zinc or other metal plate forming an opposite electrode to plate 1 and having ears, preferably as shown.
3 shows a disk or body composed of any substance holding an excitan t-such as a piece of felthaving its body filled with pulverized or crushed blue vitriol or plaster-of-paris,with crushed blue vitriol mixed therein and formed into a disk.
The copper disk 1 and the zinc disk 2 are laid together, so that the ears on the zinc disk and the ears on the copper disk will alternately lap over in the openings between the ears of both disks, and being pressed down will hold both disks together, as shown in Fig. 3. Between the plates 1 and 2 is placed the excitant-disk 3. .The disk3 is formed of felt or other fibrous material having crushed blue vitriol or other electrical excitant held between or in the fibers thereof, and in some cases Iroll the crushed blue vitriol in plasterof-paris While the plaster is plastic, and form a disk in that manner. ever, be saturated with a liquid exeitant, if desired.
The operation is as follows: The apparatus being dampened in any well-known manner, as by dipping it in water or holding it on or near the person long enough for it to absorb dampness, the excitant attacks the plates and a voltaic current is produced.
In putting the plates together I leave openings at their edges, preferably so that moisture may enter and dampen the disk 3.
What I claim is 1. Avoltaicbody-battery consistingof two or more plates, each plate having ears on its edge or periphery and spaces between the ears, and
between the plates a body holding particles of any matter forming an electrical excitant, arranged to produce by its contact with the plates a current of electricity, the ears on the plates being arranged to turn over andoverlap the portion of the body of the opposite plate, and thus hold the plates and the intervening body together, for the purposes described.
2. Avoltaic bod y-battery consisting of two or more plates, each plate having ears on its edge or periphery and spaces between theears, and when the plates are placed together the ears on each plate turned down to overlap a portion of the body of the opposite plate, and thus hold the plates together, for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
