BUTTER-CUTTER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 477,905, dated June 28, 1892.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LEOPOLD LINKIEWICZ, a

citizen of the United States, residing at Mine neapolis, in the county of Hennepinand State of Minnesota, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Butter-Cutters, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to devices for separating portions of nutter from a larger mass and giving the separated portions desired shapes.

The object of the invention is to provide a device which will contain a considerable quantity of butter and separate from the mass small portions of equal size, giving the separated portions uniform shape, and discharging them from the device. This object is accomplished by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a central vertical section of the device, and Fig. 2 a plan view of the device inverted.

In said drawings, 1 designates a cylindrical case of any desired size, 2 a central shaft therein, and 3 a spiral conveyor attached to the shaft. The shaft is supported in suitable bearings in the opposite heads of the cylinder. To one of its ends, preferably the lower, is attached a beveled gear 4, which is in mesh with a corresponding gear 5, and to the latter is attached a short shaft 6 in a bearing 7, and the shaft is provided with a handle 8 for turning it. In the lower head 9 of the cylinder is an aperture 10, from which a neck 11, of round or angular or other suitable shape, extends downward. At the lower end of this neck is a cutter 12, adapted to slide in guides 13. To the cutter is pivoted a handle 14, extending toward the center of the cylinder, and in its inner portion is a longitudinal slot 15, in which is a pin 16, that is carried by the gear-wheel 4. The pin is placed eccentricall y to the gearwheel, so that the rotation of the wheel causes the pin to describe a circle and so causes the cutter to make a reciprocation with each rotation of the wheel.-

In use butter in suitable condition is put in the cylinder and the conveyer is made to revolve and the butter, by gravity and by force of the conveyor, is pressed downward on the base and a portion of it pressed into and through the neck 11 and the protruding portion is cut off with each outward reciprocation of the cutter. In this way pats of butter of desired size and shape can be rapidly made for use in hotels, restaurants, and elsewhere where large quantities of small pats of butter are required. The neck 11 may be made dotachable, so that it can be removed and another of different form substituted.

Having described my invention, what I claim is-- 1. In a butter-cutter, a cylindrical case, a central shaft therein journaled in the cylinder-heads, a spiral conveyor carried by and encircling the shaft, a gear-wheel fixed to the exposed end of the shaft, a cutter pivoted eccentricallyto said wheel, guides therefor, a neck extending from the cylinder-head and having an opening in'the path ofthe cutter reciprocations, and means" for rotating said gear-wheel, substantially as set forth.

2. In a butter-cutter, a base, a vertical cylinder supported thereon, a shaft journaled in the cylinder-heads and carrying a'spiral conveyer, a hollow neckextending beneath the lower cylinderhead, a cutter and guides for causing'it to reciprocate across the mouth of said neck, a gear-wheel to whichsaid shaft is centrally attached and said cutter eccentrically pivoted, a second gear in mesh with the former, and connections for turning it to operate both the conveyer and cutter, substantially as set forth.
