STAMP AND ENVELOPE GUM MOISTENER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 477,887, dated June 28, 1892.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. COLE, of Pottsville, in the county of Schuylkill and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Machines for Moistening the Gum or Mucilage on Stamps, Envelopes, or other Gummed Paper, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention consists of certain improvements in the moistening-pad and the machinery for its more convenient adjustment, in connection with a stationary cup, whereby a strip of porous materialsuch as felt or clotlr-may be readily secured and suspended over the moistening fluid, into which it may be directly immersed, as will be more readily described hereinafter.

Reference is to be had to the aceompanyin g drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure l is a longitudinal elevation of my improved stamp and envelope gum moistener, showing the same as it will appear from a side View ready for operation. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal elevation of the same, showing a front View.

A is a supporting-stand havingits base extended outward and terminating in a cup b and its upper part provided with an arm a, which is perforated longitudinally, so as to form a collarfor the plunger to pass easily up or down it, as required.

B is a hollow cylindrical plunger having its head provided with a cap or hand piece D, and also provided with a narrow longitudinal slot on one side, and terminating at the bottom in a fiat plate E, projected slightly beyond, but on a line with the cylindrical part of the plunger. A screw-eye is pierced in the center-pf this plate.

0 represents a movable plate exactly the size of the stationary plate E, and also pierced with a screw-eye similar to that in the sta tionary plate.

F is a screw, which acting upon the screweyes of the plates draws them together, clasping and holding securely the pad of felt or Serial No. 410,120, (No model.)

other porous material G. The stationary plate E is made detachable from the cylinder of the plunger by means of screw-threads, so as to admit of a spiral spring being placed inside the cylinder. The projecting arm of the stand is further pierced with a horizontal screw-eye for the reception of the screw 6. When the plate is detached from the plunger and the spiral spring is placed in the cylinder, the cylinder is passed by its lower part through the collar-opening. The screw e is inpressing the plunger the moistening-pad is plunged into the water and thoroughly saturated, and the pressure being released it is raised to a position above the cup ready for use. The gummed paper is then gently passed over the under projecting surface of the moistening-pad, and receives sufficient moisture from the pad to soften the gum and prepare it for immediate use.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent As an improved article of manufacture, a stamp and envelope gum moistener having a receptacle for moistening pads, adapted to be screwed into the lower end of a spring-plunger and consisting of the shaft and plate E and the movable plate 0, secured to each other by the screw F, in combination with the strip of felt or cloth G, attached to a plunger suspended by an arm of a stand over astationary water-cup, substantially as herein shown and described, and forthe purposes set forth.
