U ITED STATES IVORY H-AzE T'oN; F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
CAR-CO UPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent mof 477,414, datedd'uneizl, 1892'.
Application filed February 23,1892. Serial No. 422,398
1' To all whom it may concern.-
' Be it known that I, IVORY HAZELTON, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Penn- '5 sylvania, have invented a new and useful'Improvement' in Oar-Couplings, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
- My invention consists of a car-coupling {0 formed of a knuckle which is pivoted on the draw-bar and a locking device of novel con-- struction for controlling said knuckle when in coupling position, as'will be hereinafter set forth; r Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a car-coupling embodying my invention. 2 represents a. longitudinal vertical section thereof Fig.3represents aperspective view of another form thereof. Fig. 4 represents a horizontal section thereof. Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A- designates a draw-head, and B designates a knuckle which 2 5 is connected therewith by means of the vertical pivot O. The knuckle has an extension or heel D, rearward of its pivot or axis, movable ina horizontal recess. in the draw-head, and in the said heelisa vertical slot or groove go E, which isada'pted to receive a tongueF, the latter being connected with a horizontally-arranged shaft G which is moii-nted'on the draw-head and provided with a crank-handle II, said draw-head having a shoulder against ;5 which the heel is adapted to ab'ut'whenit entors said draw head. I
The operat-i'0n is as follows When the.
Fig.
. (No model.)
Figs. 2 and 4, the ton enter the slot E, whereby the knuckle is con- .trolled by said tongue and thus locked and f the couplingoftheearsiseffected, theknuekles of opposite cars being engaged, as usual in such cases. \Vhen it is desired to uncouple the cars, the tongue is raised or lowered, so that it c knuckle ally, as shown illustratedin Figs. 1 and 3, and the disconnection of the en may result, it beiugevid is simple,'incxpcnsive, ture, andone that may venient and safe mann Having 'th us describe I claim as new, an Patent, is-
1.' A draw-head haVin thereto'and provided cess, a heel on the rear of to enter said recess and a horizontal shaft jou head in rear of said knuckle, a tongue dn said shaft entering said vertical recess, and means for operating said shaft, said parts being combined substantially as described.
2.- A draw-head, a knuckle having a heel with slot therein, a shaft journa'led in said draw-head, having a said slot, and a shonl against which said 11 said parts being 00! described.
