UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARCHIBALD IV. IAULL, OF WVHEELING, VEST VIRGINIA.
LAM P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 477,332, dated June 21 1892.. Application filed December 7, l 891. Serial No. 414,223. (No model.)
To all whom it Wmy concern.-
Be it known that I, ARCHIBALD W. PAULL,
useful Improvement in Lamps, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact descrip tion, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the fount of my improved lamp. Fig. 2 is acentral longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal cross-sectional view of theburner. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are corresponding views of a second form of my improvement, and Fig. 7 is a detail view showing the air-spreader in place.
My invention relates to the mode of attaching the burner to the fount of a lamp; and it consists in permanently attaching the burner to the fonnt and providing a movable burnertube therein.
In the drawings, 2 represents the fount, which is set into any suitable base. This fount is provided with the usual central drafttube 3 and burnerl. The outer casing 5 of the burner, instead of being attached by a bayonet or screw joint to the fount, as ordinarily, is permanently fastened thereto by soldering or other suitable means. Inside this casing and resting on a suitable inwardly-projecting ring or series of lugs 6 is a second movable casing 7, which is fastened to the burner-tube 8 and is removable therewith. This inner casing is provided with suitable recesses for the chimney-holding lugs 9, so that it can be taken out from between them, and both inner and outer casings are provided with perforations 10,those of the outer casingbeing larger than the inner ones. By this means the currents of air drawn in through the outer holes are divided up and turned aside by the inner perforations, and flickeringof the flame when in a draft is prevented.
In Figs. 4, 5, and 6 only a single casing 11 is provided, the burner-tube 12 being separate therefrom and when in use resting upon the annular flange 13 by a similar outwardlyturned flange 14 upon saidtube. The casing is perforated, as usual, with a series of fine holes and is provided with the chimney-holders 15.
1G is the air-feeder, permanently held in the draft-tube by soldering or otherwise.
The advantages of my construction are obvious. In the old form in lifting the fount from the base unless the burner is securely locked thereto the fount maybe dropped and the burning oil spread about, since the burner is the only projection by which the fount can be lifted, and this accident often happens by the loosening of the joint. In my construction this is impossible, as the burner is permanently fastened to the fount.
In wicking the lamp the wick-tube is lifted out, the wick placed around the central tube, and the Wick-tube then replaced.
Many changes maybe made in the form and arrangementof the parts by those skilled in the art without departure from my invention, since What I claim is 1. A central-draft lamp provided with a burner, perforated casing permanently secured thereto, and a removable wick-tube, substantially as described.
2. A lamp-fount provided with a burner-easin g permanently secured thereto, inwardlyprojecting flanges, and a burner-tube resting upon such flanges, substantially as described.
3. Alamp-founthavingacentraldraft-tube,a perforated burner-casing secured to the fount, an inwardly-projecting annular flange, and a burner-tube having a projecting portion resting thereon, substantially as described.
4. A central-draft lamp provided with a burner having a perforated casing permanently attach ed thereto, and an air-feederpermanently secured in the draft-tube, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 30th dayof November,A.D. 1891.
ARCHIBALD W. PAULL.
