CAR SEAT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 476,729, dated June 7, 1892. Application filed March 12, 1892. Serial No. 424,723- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, EDWIN L. BUSHNELL and GEORGE IV. DRYER, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Poughkeepsie, in the county of Dutchess and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar-Seats, of which the following is a specification. 7
Our invention is an improvement upon the construction of reversing means for car-seats shown in an application filed by us on the 15th of December, 1891, Serial No. 415,131, and is designed to effect the same result by means of a much simpler construction and arrangement, all as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the end frame of a carseat, showing the improved arrangement of strikenarm and supplemental arm. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 00 0c of Fig. 1.
\Vhile we prefer to use a supplemental arm in connection with a striker-arm at each end of the car-seat, we do not limit ourselves to this connection, as our improved construction may be found sufficient if used at one end, with the ordinary pivoted striker-arm at the other.
In the figures the end frame A is of ordinary construction, and pivoted to the lower part of the end frame is the striker-arm B, pivoted at its upper end to the ordinary plate I), which is adapted for attachment to the end of the back. Upon the arm B is pivoted a supplemental arm E, the pivot e of which works in a slot, permitting slight longitudinal movement of the supplemental arm, as well as a pivotal movement therein. The upper end of the supplemental arm is also pivoted to the ear of the plate Z), at f, between the pivot of the striker-arm and the periphery of the ear. The lower end of the supplemental arm is connected to the seat-frame by means of a pivot g, which passes through a slot f in the lower end of the striker-arm, which is struck from the pivot d as a center, so as to permit the free pivotal movement of said arm without interference by reason of the position of the pivot g. This pivot g is arranged in the same vertical line as the pivot cl of the striker-arm and is of course stationary, being fixed in the seat-frame, and the result of the construction is to produce precisely the same result as the more complex arrangement shown in our application referred to, and enables us to dispense with the intermediate link shown in said application as a means of connection between the end of the supplemental arm and the pivot g, connection being made in the present case directly between the lower end of the said arm and the pivot. As the back is moved on the pivots connecting it with the striker-arms the turning of the back shifts the striker-arm on the pivot (Z until the back is in a horizontal seat, at which time both the supplemental and striker arms are in a vertical position, and further movement of the back and striker-arm shifts the striker-arm to its extreme limit of its movement in the other direction and re- 0 stores the back to approximately vertical position.
YVe claim as our invention- 1. In combination, striker-arms pivoted on a suitable support, a seat-back pivoted to the striker-arms, and a supplemental arm pivoted so as to have slight longitudinal movement on one of said striker-arms and to the back, the lower end of the supplemental arm being piv otally connected to the seat-arm frame below 8c the pivot of the striker-arm, substantially as described.
2. In combination, striker-arms pivoted on suitable supports, a seat-back pivoted on the striker-arms, a supplemental arm pivoted so as to have slight longitudinal movement on one of said striker-arms, a curved slot in the lower end of one of said striker-arms, a projection g on the frame, extending through said slot, and a pivoted connection between the upper end of said supplemental arm and the back, the lower end of the arm being pivoted on the projection g, substantiall 1 as described.
In testimony whereof we affix on r signatures in presence of two witnesses.
