To all whom it may concern:

Be it known thatI, EDWIN B. PUTNEY, of Lyons, in the county of IVayne, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bill-Files, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to bill-tiles.

My object is to produce a bill-file or letterfile so constructed and arranged that it may be used as a petty ledger, provided with led germarked sheet upon which the items may be readily drawn direct from the blotter or daybook or journal and then taken out or torn off and forwarded as statements which shall contain an itemized account, and at the same time forming a convenient method for keeping small accounts without the necessity of opening regular ledger accounts.

My invention consists, first, in providing means for holding in tablet form sheets of paper ruled in ledger form or otherwise, as desired; second, in providing for holding them singly or in sets; third, in providing means for readily turning to any account by the index at the side; fourth, in providing means for separating the sheets which are turned up; fifth, in providing means for holding them there, and in the several other novel features of construction and operation hereinafter described, and specificallyset forth in the claims hereto annexed.

A is the base-piece, upon which the ledgerleaves or bill-leaves 1, arranged, preferal'ily, alphabetically, are mounted, the leaves or sheets of each letter or set of letters being secured to a base-piece 2, which is provided with a side piece 3 and upward-extending ears 4 at their ends, as shown, and adapted to be secured together loosely, thereby forming hinge-joints. These sheets are secured to the base-piece 2, preferably by perforating them and inserting them over a post or rivet 5 and erected in the base-piece 2, and are held down in engagement therewith by a spring-strap 6, hinged to one side of the tile, as at a, and adapted to be held at its opposite end by inserting it under the loop 7. I preferably index the leaves upon the side in the ordinary way.

8 is an L-shaped bracket, constructed, preferably, of wire and hinged to the front or top end of the base A and adapted to be thrown over on its base. when it is desired to open the file or turn to any account, thereby forminga support for the parts which have been turned over, as shown in Fig. 1.

9 is a loop or bracket secured substantially central to the base or to pieces secured loosely to the base and adapted to be thrown down, as shown in Fig. 2, and raised to the position shown in Fig. l'when it is desired to hold the file open for-the purpose of inspecting any account.

The inner end of one or both sides of the bracket is constructed with a erank-arm, and an indentation is made in the base, which is provided with a strap-spring and so arranged that the crank-arm will engage with it when in the raised position, the object of which is to produce a tension upon the leaves when in the position shown in Fig. 1 and to hold it in an inclined position when down, as shown in Fig. 2.

Having described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a bill-file, the combination, with the base 2, having ears thereon, of the sheets of paper removably secured to said base, said bases being adapted to be loosely connected together through their ears, as set forth.

2. In a bill-file, the combination, with the bases 2, having ears thereon, of sheets of paper reniovably secured to said bases and having an index upon their margins.

8. The combination, with the bases 2, having ears thereon and adapted to be loosely connected together, of sheets of paper removably secured to said base, and the whole mounted upon a base 4 4, as set forth.

4. The combination, with the bases 2, of the sheets secured thereon, said bases 2 being loosely secured together and mounted upon the base A, of a bracket mounted upon the front end of the base A for the purpose of forming a rest when the sheets are turned up, and the bracket 9, mounted upon the base A for the purpose of holding the sheets up, as set forth.
