SHEET-METAL PACKAGE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 476,353, dated June '7, 1892.

I and necessitate reboxing frequently when being handled, which adds labor and expense to the cost of shipping and may result in injury to a portion of the contents.

The object of my said invention is to provide a package of tin-plate or other sheetmetal plates which shall be so secure that the above-named disadvantages will be overcome, while at the same time it will be inexpensive and of such a nature that it can be conveniently and quickly put up and secured,

thus lessening the cost and increasing the value of the package, all as will behereinafter more particularly described and claimed.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof, and on which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the case or wrapper of said package; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section through the package when complete and secured; Fig: 3, a similar view in cross-section; and Fig. 4, a detail perspective view of one corner of the case or wrapper, showing a modified construction.

In said drawings the portions marked A represent the contents of the package, and B the case or wrapper thereof. The contents A consist of plates of tin or other sheetmetal plates which it is desired to ship. The case or wrapper 13 consists of a sheet of metal such as sheet-iron or similar metal-and may be of an inferior quality or damaged or imperfect, such as would ordinarily be thrown into the scrap-pile,having its corners cut and its edges turned up to form a box or body adapted to receive the number of plates which it is desired a package shall contain. The

upper edges 1) of the sides and front end of the box thus formed are preferably turned over inwardly, as shown in Fig. 1, forming ways or grooves underneath, while the upper edge I) of the rear end of the box is turned outward at a point a short distance below the upper edges of the sides, leavinga free opening to the ways formed by the overturned edges I). Said case is provided with a top B, the side edges and front end of which are turned up to form flanges b and its rear edge is turned downward and under, forming a flange 19 The package is put up as follows: The plates to the desired number are placed in the casing or box, which is bent into the form shown in Fig. 1, either before or after said plates are placed thereonpreferablybefore. The side flanges b of the top B are slid into the ways under the top edges b of the sides of said box, and the front flange b is intersaid box, while the flange b on the rear end of the top is interlocked with the outwardlyturned flange Z) on the rear end of the box. Said top resting immediately upon the plates, the packer simply turns and pounds down the edges of the several sides by means of a mallet, forming a double seam all around, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. This work can be done very rapidly, and when completed a very secure and durable package is formed at but slight cost either of time or material.

In Fig. 4 I have shown the corner as made by lapping the two parts composing the sides and ends and riveting them together. This corner will of course be more secure, and can be used, if preferred, although for all ordinary purposes no rivets will be needed.

Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
