UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREEBORN F. RAYMOND, 2D, OF NEWTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
GLUING ATTACHMENT FOR HEEL-NAILING MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 476,306, dated-I une 7, 1892.
Application filed July 27, 1889. Serial No. 318,945. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREEBORN F. RAY- M OND, 2d, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newton, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gluing Attachm ents to Heel-Nailing Machines, of which the followingis a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in explaining its nature. V
In the process of attaching heel-blanks and top lifts by machinery it is customary in certain classes of work to glue the heelseat and the top lift, and this is done by the boy or operator who handles the heel-blank and top lift applying to the heel-seat of the heel or to the under surface of the top lift by means of a brush glue or paste contained in a pan placed upon some part of the machine or a table adjacent. This is a slow process, and compels the use of liquid glue or glue that is liquid at ordinary temperature. It is desirable in certain cases, although not essential, that the glue employed be heated or warmed, as by so doing it is given greater fluidity, While at the same time the varieties of glue which are hard or notin proper working condition at ordinary temperature may be used; and my invention comprises an attachment adapted to be secured to any part of the table of a heeling-machine, comprising in substance a frame having a clamp by which it is secured or attached to the frame of the heeling-machine, a shelf for holding a lamp or burner, a chamber for holding Water, a removable pan for containingthe glue or other adhesive material, and a roll or other equivalent glue-applyin g device supported upon the glue-pan so that its outer surface or periphery extends into the glue, whereby upon its rotation glue is caused to be lifted from the pan and applied to the heel-seat of the heel blank or surface of the top lift when it is used in turning the roll.
In the drawings, Figure lis a view in vertical section of said attachment; Fig. 2, a view in plan thereof. Fig. 3 is a detail view representing the manner in which the shaft of the glue-applying device is held by the frame. Figs. 4 and 5 show slight modifications in the form of the glue-applying device.
A is the cast-metal frame or shell. B is a clamp extending laterally therefrom and comprising the arms b b and the fastening-screw b2. The frame A has the lower compartment or shelf a, which holds the lamp or other heat-applying device a. Above this is a diaphragm a2, which forms the bottom of a Water-chamber a3. This chamber is open at the top, and it contains the glue-pan d4, the pan being partially surrounded by Water and having a flange a5, Which rests upon the top of the shell forming the wall of the chamber as.
O is the roll made of felt, rubber, or other suitable material and carried by a shaft c. This shaft has its bearings between the arms o', extending upward from the frame A. The surface c2 of the roll may have any desired shape, and it is immersed in the glue in the pan any desired extent.
In use theY glue is maintained at proper temperature by the Water, which is heated by the Hame of the lamp, and to apply the glue to the heel-seat or top lift the operator simply moves the heel-blank or top` lift with the roll, bracing the heel-blank or top lift against the same as he moves it. The surface c2 of the roll may be of a less length or width than the length or Width of the top lift, andit may be shaped, as represented in Figs. 4 and 5, to apply the glue in lines Or spots rather than in a continuous layer.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- As an improved article of manufacture, the herein-described gluing attachmentfor heelnailing machines, comprising a shell A, having upper and lower compartments divided by a closed partition, the upper compartment being Water-tight and removably holding a glue or cement containing receptacle and the lower compartment forming a support for a heater, the attaching arm, the parts of said shell and attaching arm being integral, and a rotatable glue or cement applying-tdevice mounted over and movable in said glue or cement holding receptacle, substantially as set forth.
FREEBORN F. RAYMOND, 2D. In presence of J. M. DOLAN, A. P. PORTER.
