SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 476,070, dated May 31, 1892.
Application led December 12, 1891. Serial No. 414,884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that we, AARON RICHARDSON, of Uniontown, and FREDERICK E. RICHARDSON, of Manchester, in the county of Delaware and State of Iowa, have invented anew and Irnf proved Latch, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved latch which is simple and durable in construction, easily attached to all kinds of doors, and arranged to conveniently open the door from one side and to lock the door in an open or closed position.
The invention consists of certain parts and details' and combinations of the saine, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a front View of the improvement as applied and showing the door in a locked open position. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. l; and Fig. 3 is a similar view of the same, showing the door closed.
The door A, on which the latch is appliet is pivoted or hinged in the usual manner to the door-casing B, and on the door A is fastened by suitable means the latch-casing C, containing a bolt D,iitted to slide in suitable guideways in the said latch-casing. The inner end ofthe bolt D is pressed down by a spring E, so as to hold the said bolt in an outermost position. In the bolt D is secured'a transversely-extending pin forming a handle F, the said handle projecting through guide- Ways C in the latch-casing C, and also through a corresponding slot A, formed in the door A. The handle F is made of sufficient length to project a suitable distance beyond the casing and the door to be taken hold of, either at the front of the door or at the rear of the casing, as described.
One end of the handle F is formed with a notch F', adapted to engage a keeper G, fixed tothe door-casingB at the inside of an aperture B', through which can pass the end of the handle, as is plainly illustrated in Figs. 1 and 5o 2. The outer end of the bolt D is adapted to engage the usual keeper I-I, secured in the door-casing.
It will be seen that the spring E presses the bolt D in an outermost position, the said bolt being4 guided by the handle F, iitted to slide in the guideways C. Now when the door is closed, as illustrated in Fig. 3, the bolt D engages the keeper l-I, thus locking the door @mi and holding the saine closed. When it isfd- 6o sired to open the door, the operator takes hold of the outer end of the ha/ndle F and presses upward, so as to lift the/bolt D out of engagement with the keeper H, at the saine tirne pressing the spring E. As soon as the boltD is disengaged the operator pulls outward on the handle, thus swinging the door A open. By swinging the door back intothe position shown in Figs. l and 2 the notched end ofthe handle F passes through the opening B' in the 7o door-casing B and engages with its notch F the fixed keeper G, so that the door is locked in an open position, it being understood that the spring E permits the handle F to engage with its notch F the said keeper G and hold the handle in contact with the keeper 'coprevent accidental closing of the door. Thus the handle serves to move the bolt and door and also to fasten the latter in an open position.
