CHARLES H. PETERSON AND ORLANDO O. RUGE, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
COMPOUND FOR CLEANING AND SCOURING.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 475,413, dated May 24, 1892.
Application filed August 20,1891. Serial No. 403,166. (No specimens.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, CHARLES H. PETER- sON and ORLANDO O. RUGE, citizens of the United States, residing in the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Detergent Compound, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Our composition consists of the following ingredients combined in the proportions stated, viz: water, distilled, one quart; aquaammonia, one fluid ounce; alcohol, six fluid drafdsT'sulphuric ether, six flh'id drains; glycerine,one-half fluid ounce; cocog n gkp i l spap, two and one-half ounces; quillaia bark, one ounce. These ingredients are to be thoroughly mingled by agitation, first thoroughly dissolving the cocoanut-oil soap in the water, then adding the quillaia bark and the liquid ingredients. While we have specified that the Water used be distilled, yet this is not essential, although preferable.
We have included in our formula the quillaia bark, yet this ingredient may be dispensed with and a composition produced of the remaining ingredients that to all practical purposes is as serviceable. The quillaia bark has, however, properties of value as an additional ingredient, although, as stated, it is not essential to a composition to be used for the purposes specified; WVe therefore desire to be understood as claiming a composition of matter such as described and for the purposes specified,both as includingit as an ingredient and without it.
The composition, as described, is useful in cleaning carpets and other coarse fabrics and wood-work. In a slightly-diluted form it may be used to clean paint-work and finer fabrics. In a still more diluted form it is useful for toilet purposes, as for baths and as a dentrifice. In using it for cleaning fabrics, woodwork, &c., the article to be cleaned should be freed as much as possible from all superfluous dust and dirt and the liquid composition applied with a sponge or cloth dampened with the same, in all instances following with clear water for rinsing purposes. For bathing purposes a small amount of the liquid may be put' in the bath, using clear water after. For the teeth it should be applied in a very diluted form with a brush, as is ordinarily done.
W e are aware that some of the different ingredients included in our formula have been used for similar purposes alone, and as combined with other ingredients to be used for the purposes specified for our composition;
