SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 474,979, dated May 17, 1892.
Application filed June 12, 1890. Serial No. 355,147. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES S. UPTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in means for elevating the chimney holder or gallery of central-draft lamps in which the outer wick-tube forms a part of the burner and is removable therewith for the purpose of wicking the lamp or adjusting the wick on the holder, and is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, and in which similar letters of reference indicate like or equivalent parts wherever found throughoutthe several Views.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a central-draft lamp provided with my improvement, parts beingshown in section and other parts being broken away in order to more fully illustrate the application of my improvement to this style of lamp. Fig. 2 is a top plan view; and Figs. 3 and 4 are side ele-,
vations of the burner, showing details of construction, portions of the burner being broken away for this purpose and the chimney holder or gallery being shown in an elevated position.
The chief object of my invention is to provide means for lighting the lamp without removing the chimney in the class of lamps hereinbefore described, and particularly in lamps of said class known as overhead or hanging lamps, in which the removal of the chimney after the shade usually employed is in place is always attended with great inconvenience and danger of breaking the chimney and burning the hands of the operator.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the lamp-reservoir, B the central draft-tube, and O D a removable burner, which in this case consists of two parts-the lower part 0 and the upper adjustable part D, which constitutes the chimney holder or gallery, and is also removable from the other part. The lower removable part 0 is provided with a tube E, which forms the outer wall of the wick-chamber when the burner is in position and with an outer perforated air-distributer F, by which air is supplied'to the outer mantle of the flame. This lower portion C of the burner consists, strictly, as will be seen, of the outer perforated portion referred to and the outer wick-tube E, united at the base by a diaphragm G, and the other portion Fis provided with a bead H, which rests upon the top of the neck of the reservoir when the burner is in position and with an outwardly-projecting flange or rim K, on which rests the upper adjustable portion of the burner, the chimney holder or gallery D. This adjustable portion D is provided at diametrically-opposite points with downwardly-projecting rods L, which are adapted to enter and slide within guidetubes M, preferably attached to the inner walls of the perforated portion F of the lower part of the burner, and the diaphragm G is perforated below these tubes, so that the rods L will pass down into the reservoir. The rim or flange K is provided with notches or grooves N'on one side of the burner, and within these notches or grooves rests a bar 0, provided with a handle 0. The rod 0 is provided with segmental levers P, firmly attached thereto, and to each of these levers is hinged or pivoted a link R, and this link is in turn hinged or pivoted to a downwardly projecting lug or shank S, attached to the adjustable portion of the burner D, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3; or these links may be pivoted directly to the rods L, as shown in Fig. 4. A locking device U, pivoted to the outer wall of the tube E, is provided at its lower end with an angular outwardly-projecting portion- U, which, when the bar 0 is in position and the locking device turned down, rests upon the bar 0 and holds it firmly in place. In assembling these parts of the burner the rodsL are first inserted in the guide-tubes M and the bar 0 is then placed in the grooves or notches N and the lock U turned down until the lower outwardly-projecting portion U rests firmly upon the bar 0, and the upper part D of the burner is then pressed downward until it rests upon the rim or flange K, the levers P and links R, by reason of their pivoted connection, readily adjusting themselves to this movemen t of the part D. The entire burner is then placed upon the reservoir by simply inserting the lower part thereof within the neck of the reservoir, where it is held by an ordinary bayonetable portion or chimney-holder D will be elevated to the position shown in Figs. 1, 3, and
4, the levers P and links R operating to produce this result, when thelamp may be lighted I or the wick trimmed, as desired, and then by a slight movement of the handle 0" in theopposite direction the part D will be lowered to itsnormalposition. Wheneveritbecomesnecessary to wick the lamp or to adjust the wick upon the holder, these parts being of ordinary construction and not shown, theentire burner, including the outer wick-tube, is lifted from the lamp, when the wick-holder and wick may be readily removed therefrom, and when it is desired to clean the burner itself or the separate parts thereof the lock U is turned out-of contact with the bar 0, when the upper part D of the burner, together with the rods L, bar 7 O, levers P, &c., may be separated from the lower portion of the burner and free access had to all parts thereof.
Having fully described my invention, its construction, and operation, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent the follow-1 mg:
1. The combination, with a central-draft lamp, of a removable burner consisting of two par-ts, one of which is vertically adjustable with reference to the other part and removable therefrom, the non-adjustable part be mg provided with a tube which forms the. outer wall of the wick-chamber and with; guide-tubes and the adjustable part being provided with downwardly-extending rodsj which fit movably within said guide-tubes,
the rods being located within the outer walls E of the burner, devices for raisin-g and lowering the adjustable part, and means for coni nectingsaid devices with the non-adjustable part and by operating which the adjustable part, together with the devices for raising and lowering the same, may be separated from the other part, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with a central-draft lamp, of a removable burner consisting of two parts, one of which is vertically adjustable with reference to the other'part and removable therefrom, the non-adjustabie part being provided with a tube which forms the outer wall of the wick-chamber when the burner is in position and an upwardly-extending portion on which the adjustable part rests and also with guide-tubes within the upwardly-extending portion which register vwith perforations in the base thereof and the adjustable part being provided with rods which are adapted to enter said guide-tubes, devices for raising and lowering the adjustable part, and means for connecting said devices with the other part and by operating which the adjustable part, together with the devices for raising or lowering the same, may
be separted from the other part,sub'sta=ntially as shown and described.
3. The combination, with a central-draft lamp, of a removable burner consisting of two parts, one of which is vertically adjustable with reference to the other part and removable therefrom, the non-adjustable part being provided with a tube which forms the outer wall of the wick-chamber when the burner is in position and an upwardly-extending portion on which the adjustable part rests and also wit-h guide-tubes within the upwardly-extending portion which register with perforations in the base thereof and the adjustable part being provided with rods, which are adapted to enter said guide-tubes, the bar 0, provided with levers P and links R for raising and lowering the adjustable part, and a locking device for connecting the bar 0 and the adjustable part with the other part, substantially as shown and described.
